I recently picked up a new mosin nagant m44 made in 1943 and would like to know the best parts to buy for putting on a solid mount and scope. I would prefer not to drill anything but am open to it as a last resort. Please recommend only tried and true products. ~cheers

There are many depends. Do you want to be able to restore the gun to original unmodified? Do you prefer regular scope mounting rather than scout scope mounting.
I ask because there are scope mounts that sit on or replace the rifles rear sight and can be removed or removed and the original sight replaced. This does require the use of an extended eye relief scope. It also allows use of standard bolt handle and ammo clips can still be used.
Generally the other style requires drilling and will allow a regular the use of a regular rifle scope. But it involves altering the bolt handle to clear the mount and scope. I've found this forum to be helpful:

Make the decisions of which way you want to go and then the answers can be more specific.

do not DO NOT DO NOT drill a 1943 M44... that said a scout mount that replaces the rear sight leaf is the only option

or just use the issue sights

from the looks of it I will want to go with the scout style less invasive method. Anyone recommend just a decent scope for such eye relief within 100$ ?

Leupold Scout scope or Burris Scout scope. Both over 100, but well worth it. The folks at Millett just informed me they have a new IER/EER scope that should work in the same eye relief range (nominal about 9" to 10" but very forgiving at closer and farther distances). Haven't tried the Millett but the first two are very well proven scopes. We have the Leupold here and it's been great.

I am just going to throw this out there,
NCstar pistol scope, 2-7x32, i got two, and they work great.
Cost me about $57 with a mount. Check my link for mosin goodies.

Donning flame suit now....

I also hear that Bsquare makes a very solid mount, I've had some trouble with the other brands, but problems are easily remedied.

I did that to mine, and not only did it hold zero, it was easy to use and install. Should you go this route, LOCTITE, and lots of it. It looks like hell, but it sure works.
