Um yeah im new but i was wondering if i am the only one under 18 worried about not being able to buy guns when we get old enough...........im 16 and pretty worried after yesterdays election :(

have your father buy you a gun.

i agree. i think its terrible how some people have a "iv got mine" or "it will be grandfathered" attitude.

when its grandfathered its no longer a RIGHT it a granted privilege

i feel bad for people who were close enough to taste it.

i say you ask you parent/guardian to buy you something.

yeah problem is my parents aren't the gun type.......no bb, airsoft, paintball...............so i got 2 years to go for an evil black rifle...... 5 for a pistol :(

I tend to do a good bit of trading. Every two years or so I seem to decide I want a different gun. It is going to be touch and go for a while. Personally I recommend joining the NRA if you aren't already a member. To be safe ask for a gun for christmas. The optimistic part of me says we have a couple of years before we start to see any drastic changes. He doesn't want to jump into extremist mode right away, he wants that second term. But CHANGE is coming, its just a matter of when and how much.

Being the same age as you, I understand your worry. I paid for my firearms through my parents this year. That could be a problem for you, however, if your parents are not the pro-firearm type.

Your best bet is to convince them of the reasoning behind owning a firearm rather than trying to get them to allow you a firearm outright. Explain why owning a firearm or two is a good idea. Explain that bad guys will always be able to get firearms, that firearms are no more the problem of killing than pencils are the problem of misspelled words and it is within you and your parents rights to defend themselves against violent assault, something that will become difficult to impossible if you do not have firearms of your own. Don't just repeat what I said! Do some extensive research! Create a reasonable argument and try to present it carefully and little by little. Honestly, this is the only choice you have at this point being underage. Research and a mature foolproof argument(s) is the key. Christmas present is a good idea.

Its entirely up to you, but you might be better off starting with something more um... how can I say it... politically correct. Something like an SKS or another semi-auto rifle that is less stereotyped than an evil black rifle might be a better place for you to start out. Again, entirely up to you. Sometimes looks can kill.

Good luck!

You don't even have to get a semi auto right off the bat. A lever action rifle can be a very effective weapon against all forms of predator (Texas Ranger Joachin Jackson kept his levergun in the front of his car, and left his full auto AR-18 in the trunk, and he was the only Ranger in 30 or so counties).

And lever actions can be more fun to fire for a non gun-nut. Operating the lever can be a satisfying act in itself, and it'd certainly get you a foot in the door that way.

yeah thanks for the analogy.........used it multiple times :) Like with airsoft and paintball the idea of fun being shooting someone else, just not their idea of the fun i should be having :( The real guns my parents aren't hunting ppl so they see no reason for me to have one so they say wait till you're out of the house and then knock yourself out. Not their problem

Okay, more detailed advice.

First, don't approach it, or give off the impression of 'I just want a gun for myself'.

Suggest going to an firearms instructor or range as a family, to learn about the subject. Suggest going out to the range as a family activity, especially if you don't have much in common with your parents (I know at age 16 /I/ sure wasn't very connected with my father).

Pitch this as something you would like to do WITH the family.

I agree with RX-178. Use it as "bonding" with your father... who knows, you BOTH might like it : ). On a side note, here in MI, we can purchase pistols at 18, as long as it is a private transaction (non FFL) with a purchase permit of course. Thats how I got mine at 18. I love how laws don't make sense (can't purchase from a store.... can purchase from some guys house?).

Best part about my advice is that it's not just rhetoric to help you get you your gun, it's TRUE.

At 16, man I didn't see eye to eye with ANYONE older than me, much less my father that I happened to live with. Eventually I decided I wanted to start shooting. He used to shoot silhouette, but hadn't done it in 30 years, and didn't even care if he had a gun in the house anymore. Now we're best friends, and I even work at his optics company.

I can't talk him into buying a Remington 700 BDL like he used to use to shoot silhouette with. And his reason was 'I can just use your .308'

He was referring to a PTR-91. :D

i was sixteen when i first got my bp rifle, the store clerk didnt say anything so neither did i, i told mom an dad i couldnt return it so they lemme keep it lol:D. im worried about handguns in particular i only recently turned 18, and had my 1858 remington conversion cylinder for 45lc shipped, very cool, reload em an hope to get real good at it.... reloading is kinda addictive it seems lol:rolleyes:. but as far as a modern pistol like one good for CC, i dunno if'n obama will let that stay legal:(. just hopin if any ban is put down it'll be like prohibition an eventually repealed.... or whatever they call it when things go back to normal:scrutiny:

Realistically, I wouldn't worry about it too much for two reasons. First, the new administration has got its hands full with some other, somewhat difficult (and more politically expedient), issues. The are likely not going to ram restrictive gun legislation through on day one of the next session. Second, even if a new AWB/gun ban/etc DOES pass, we will certainly challenge it under Heller. In the post-Heller world, it is not a foregone conclusion that if Congress tries to ban certain types of guns (again) that it even has that power to do so (depending on what the Court has to say, of course).

My point is that all of this--other issues, possible ban, and legal challenge--will take a lot longer than two years. So you may not have anything to worry about in terms of not being of age in time. But even if such a ban were passed tomorrow, it is not at all certain that it will be upheld. So don't freak out! Rather, enjoy your youth and try to convince your parents and anti-gun friends that we are normal, and guns are a great hobby and community to be a part of.
