Light bullets for 30-06

You can grind the mandrel down .001 or so with some fine sandpaper to get the neck sized down a little bit more. Lee will also sell you a smaller one.

I can't get 110 bullets to be accurate in all 3 of my '06 rifles. Not only is the bullet short so it doesn't have much bearing surface for the rifling lands, but the twist on an '06 is for 150 grain and up. It just doesn't stabilize lighter bullets very well.

Don't get me wrong, I can make a nice round group. It's just twice the size of my average 168 and 180 grain groups.

The better groups were with faster powders, IMR 3031 and Benchmark. Still not good groups, but 110 grain is more consistent with faster powders (at least in my rifles). Let us know if you find the magic formula.

I did better with the 130 gr Speer's HP on wood chucks then I did with the 110s gr. The 110 gr would tumble if I pushed them too fast. IMR 3031 seemed to be the best powder in my rifle.

SR4759 or a reduced load of H4895 will tighten the groups up with Sierra 110s in either 308 or -06. It is a 150-200 yd max load but it knocks coyotes down quick. Probably be a good small whitetail load too.

Check out Lees website for notes on setting up your neck sizing die on certain presses that tend to "cam over" at the top of the press stroke and how it effects neck tension. I have one of these presses ( a rockchucker ) and have to follow this proceedure also . I actually found this to be a benefit as I can custom set the tension light and seat the bullets .003 long as to lighly contact the lands in my rifle then chamber them and remove them , return to my press and put a light crimp on them with a Lee crimp die and am getting some great results . My cases for this technique have all had the necks turned as well as neck sized to insure they are uniform. 10 SPOT

30-06 100 grain Speer Plinkers

I've had great luck with the Speer 100 grain Plinkers. They are a 1/2 jacketed (front half of slug is soft lead and under bore size). They fly great from my Ruger 77. Consult the Speer book for loading data.

They print about the same place as my 180 grain Nosler Partitions, so no sight adjustments are needed.

I've been shooting them out to 200 yards on jack rabbits and coyotes. They really mushroom on contact. Pretty much no rabbit left. Don't remember the velocity, but they are much faster than standard 30-06 and don't kick much.

"...seat them way out..." Don't even try. A 110 grain bullet isn't going to give you the same OAL as a 180. 110's are really made for the .30 Carbine. Depending on the varmint, your 180 grain load will be fine. There's nothing that says you can't hunt varmints with your deer load. Great practice too. It will pound your shoulder a whole bunch more, of course. Work up a load using the 130's, but don't try to get the same OAL as the 180's with them either.

Hornady 110gr Spire Point

In the 30-06, seat the bullet base into the neck .230" My old notes dont have COL Bullets dont have to be near the rifling to work. My loads uses IMR 4350, IMR 4895. CCI mag primer. A kids load was Alliant 2400-24gr. Out of an old Rem 760 gamemaster, average groups ran 1 1/2" to 1.875" @ 100yds. Not great, but that is the best rifle would do with any load. Used the high velocity loading for running deer target competitions at 135 yds off hand shooting 3 shots. Went deer hunting with the 110gr one year (to lazy to load some 150grs) The 110gr didnt go out the other side of the buck, but stoped him in his tracks @ 80+yds. Use the above Alliant 2400 load data at your own risk.

I have had really good luck with the 125gr Sierra SP and and the minimum load of Re7. That gets me around 2,700 fps in an old Win 70 and accuracy has been spectacular. Performance duplicates the Remington Reduced Recoil ammunition.

I found a lot of the Speer PSP's (for 30 cal pistol), & FSP's and a box of the Speer 130 HP's and others at a local sports store that has a decent selection of reloading stuff. They were $13 - $15 a box and I bought a total of 1000 boolits that day in 2 trips. After deer season I am going to try and work up some accuracy loads in my 30-06 and also for a marlin 30-30 with the FP's. Couldn't pass up on the cheap prices and I don't need crazy fast loads. If they didn't perform on deer I have a lot of varminting to do... Used to use Speer on woodchucks back in Pa out of a 30-06 and the results were dramatic as you could imagine. i would have had better luck if I didn't drive them so hard though...

110's & 125's shoot about the same out of my old 03A3 Springfield sporter.
Two groove barrel - 1/10 rifling.

110 Sierra JHP = About 1 MOA.
125 Speer JSP = About 1 1/4"

Try 53 grains IMR 4064 with the 110 seated 3.00" OAL.
Try 53 grains IMR4895 with the 125 seated 3.100".

Don't even try to seat to the rifling, because you can't!

Sierra 2110s shoot great in my M77 using Win748.

I had real good accuracy and unbelievable speed (for a .30-06) with Sierra 110 HP's. They were smokers! BUT, I decided/realized that I was likely going to burn my barrel out prematurely, i.e. .220 Swift, so I quit shooting them, but they were extremely accurate (and hell on recipiants!). I now use the 125 Sierra Sptizer and am quite happy with it.
