Losing My AR Cherry Tomorrow

Of all the guns I've owned and tens of thousands of rounds I've fired, I have never even shot an AR.

So...

This arrived today. A guy going through a D.I.V.O.R.C.E. needed some quick cash so who was I to turn down a Bushy deal?

Picked it up from my local FFL dealer, stripped it, cleaned it, and installed a Magpul trigger guard.
(budget optics are temporary and came with the package)

Headed to the range tomorrow to learn how to shoot it. I know which end makes the loud noise, and that's about it.

Range report to follow.
 
Good for you.

The sprrrooing sound may bother you at first but you will learn to love it.

I remember my first time. My fifteenth birthday and my dad rented a full auto Colt SP1 (Don't remember exactly what it was). I put 200 rounds of Wolf laquored steel case ammo through that old slickside on full auto, as fast as it could be reloaded and did not have one malfunction. From what I have been reading on the net I must have had a one in a million experience.

Man I wish that shooting range was still open.:(
 
doc, first, congrats!

second a couple things:
1. you need to know how to do the safety function check, especially on a used gun, where you don't know what kind of knucklehead owned it before you and what they might have done to the trigger/sear. do a search on it and do it before you go to the range.
2. do yourself a favor and lose that optic. seriously. i'm not knocking cheap optics; it's how it's mounted. unless the middle of your cheeks are 4" lower than your eyeball, there's no way you can shoot that thing consistently or effectively. besides, you don't want to spend your first AR15 range session ever getting frustrated trying to sight it in. and everything you read on the internet about BZO and IBZO, and where bullets impact at given ranges and how much holdover you need at close range, etc etc is all written about sights that are roughly 2.6" above the bore. not 4" above bore. just use the irons until you can sort out a better optic.
3. lube it generously before you shoot it.

I'll do something different eventually, but one unknown factor is my eyesight. I wear tri-focals, so we'll just have to wait and see how the red dot shakes out during the shake down run tomorrow.

And, regarding lube:
When I disassembled it today, I cleaned everything down to the firing pin and put a light coat of lube on everything.

In the future, what do you recommend? Rem Oil or something like high grade wheel bearing grease?

If only I had $849 bucks I could get one just like that. Damn last summer and its gas prices (I spent $1000 dollars in just three months on gas).

CLP is what is required by the US Army, and the USMC for cleaning, lubricating, and preserving the parts on the M16, all variants to date. Unless you are shooting in arctic conditions, in which case, they give you a different viscosity of CLP, called LAW. Never shall lubricants me mixed in the same weapon. When switching from one lube to another, the weapon must be thoroughly stripped, dried, and wiped down. Never dry clean your weapon. In the manual which came with mine (TM-9-1005-319-10, Operators manual for M16A2,A3,A4, M4A1), it even describes the two 'grades' of lubrication:

Lightly lubed: A film of lubricant just barely visible to the eye.

Generously lubed: heavy enough that it can be spread with the finger.

The BCG (Bolt Carrier Group) in mine gets generously lubed, the ejector also, the charging handle gets lightly. good luck have fun. can't wait to see your range report.

anything.

personally, i like the old LSA better than CLP and I only recently ran out of my large supply of it, but i don't claim to be a lube guru. I switched to using two different lubes now: slip2k EWL because it's non-toxic, and machine gunner's lube because it's freakin awesome and Larue sends me tiny little bottles of it every time i order something
 
AR's smell good when you get to shootin' 'em. :) Maybe only mine do. I guess it's just the gas being vented back toward your nose through the gap by the charging handle, but I like it. :)

I have to admit, I'm curious about what you paid in the current circumstances.

i used A similar title in a concealed Carry thread which was locked within minutes, go figure diff staff now.

I have to admit that the title caught my eye and I just had to read them all. I looked at a similar weapon here in Calif. but the non-removable "10 shot" magazine turned me away. (Bought a Kel-Tec instead)

I retire in 5 years and will get out of Calif.

Congrats on the Bushy Doc!

Doc let me first start off by saying congrats on the AR purchase I own a Bushmaster M4 and it is one of my favorite rifles I own.. Regarding the lube for your AR, I use Breakfree CLP which is what the military uses on there weapons. As far as optics go if you will be in the market for a new one, I am actually looking at an Eotech, they make great optics and are also pretty reasonable in price for what you get! Hope this helps some. IMO a gun collection is not complete without an AR.
