Why I can not finish building AR #3

Let me get this straight, BSA. You're putting #3 on hold to build #4 for #1?

What is your opinion of the JP 3.5T spring set? Will it fire hard primers?

Or is the 4.0 Tactical Spring Kit that much better?

I mainly shoot my reloads using CCI Small Rifle Magnum primers. 98% of the ammunition I shoot are my own reloads. I have military grade M193 and M855 along with some commercial stuff like Federal and PMC stored in ammo cans mainly intended for use if reloading components and ammo supplies dry up. (In fact I am currently shooting up my Clinton era stash from 25 years ago.) My military ammo stash is Federal Lake City, PMC and IMI.
The only problem I have seen anyone have with using the lighter spring kits is when shooting European surplus ammo or some of the steel case stuff. I put one of the spring sets in my friend's rifle and he has fired MEN, Tulamo steel and brass, LC M855 , Federal, Winchester and a few others without any trouble.
I sent LoonWulf a mil-spec hammer and trigger that I had cleaned up with a lower parts kit. He really liked it.
If you want to send me your fire control group, I clean it up and send it back along with the JP springs.

GunnyUSMC,

As usual you are truly generous.

This QMS trigger has been a big disappointment. Along with being gritty the trigger also failed to reset on me once. It definitely needs a little TLC.

The ACT should be showing up this week. I'll be in touch.

I'll PM you my address so that you can send it. You can use it in the Purple People Eater.

I forgot to mention that the flashhider on #1 is going to be put on #3 so that the flashhider that is currently in Parts Drawer A can be put on #1.

And the rear sight on #2 is going on #3 so that I can put a new sight on #2.

Another part arrived today that is intended for #3 so it may end on #4 instead. :what:

Playing with legos sure is fun. :D:D:D

Using Lego math it appears your short one flash hider.
I have a bunch of A2 flash hiders in a box.
I may still have some like these too. Just let me know which one you like.

Look at it mathematically. For example, Assume you have

3 choices for color,
4 choices for trigger,
3 choices for hand guard
5 choices for rear sight
5 choices for barrel length
2 choices for butt stock

Then, you have 3x4x3x5x5x2 = 1800 DIFFERENT combinations.

From this, I conclude that you cannot finish AR#3 because you are a victim of paralysis by analysis (a disease that has infected many others).

I suggest that you just pick one and put it together without worrying too much. If you don't like, you have plenty of others to try.

if your going with peep sites, I highly recomend A1/A2 uppers. They have a charm to them, act as a heat sink and of course are a handle. Far tougher than any pop ups

AR upper receivers aren't subjected to much heat to sink!

Just build as many complete ARs as you have parts for, then go shoot them as much as you can afford. Don't worry about how they're configured now, because they will evolve as you gain experience. You can always swap the parts around later. That's what I do. Shoot, swap parts around, then shoot some more until everything settles into a configuration I like.

To the ARA Group,

I have two AR's that are completely built...

Well except for #1 that I want to put a different flashhider on mainly for looks. (Then again I may leave it as is depending on my mood).

The ALG ACT trigger arrived and is installed on #1. As GunnyUSMC said I love it. It is a very nice FCG. I hope to get to the range Friday to run it through it's paces.

So both 1 & 2 are good-to-go.

I have builds 3 and 4 in progress with The Purple People Eater (4) designated as a gift to Daughter #1. (This is the kid that claimed all of my guns last fall when she was visiting. Smart kid with good tastes in guns.) My long term goal is to build 6 AR's as there are 6 adults in my family and with the exception of Daughter #1 let them each pick the AR they like. I may have to do some parts swapping or even build another one to please everyone. :what:

And since I believe 1 is none, 2 is 1 and 3 is 2 that means I need two more AR's (7 & 8) so I have my personal use ones covered.

And don't even start talking about the Grandkids. Thank goodness they are still to young to start shooting.

p.s. I took advantage of a sale this weekend and ordered some more parts for #3. I am danging the torpedoes and going full speed to get #3 done...

soon.

The parts swapping is why I can't get #3 done. :p

I have made a promise to myself not to do anymore parts swapping on 1 & 2 until I get 3 & 4 done. :(

Well I do have a extra flashhider in Parts Drawer A that will look cool on #1. :ninja:

Nope, Nope! I'm not going to do it. I made a promise to myself. :neener:

It is much, much worse than that. You forgot to factor in extra magazines and ammunition. :uhoh:

Every serious AR owner should have 10 30 round magazines for each AR. :ninja:

And since the AR is useless with a empty magazine that means I need 300 rounds to fill them up. :scrutiny:

As my fingers get confused trying to calculate how many magazines and rounds of ammunition I would need for 1800 guns it is enough to say my condition is terminal. :(

Hello. My name is Demi-Human. (Sigh) And I am an AR-aholic.
I have just finished my Valkyrie build. The Golden Eagle arrived at eleven today. It won't fit with the precision rings on the receiver, but they are so beautiful I can not bring myself to send them back. They would most likely fit on the Adams Arms blaster. A cantilevered mount is in order. I can't wait to start load development!

Anyways, I was thinking about a Three Hundred Blackout next as I don't have a pistol AR to go with my Four Fifty Bushmaster.

Did someone say doughnuts? This may take awhile and I never pass up an AR. Doughnuts! I meant doughnuts!

:)

I have given build #4 a name. I call it my Purple People Eater. You are showing your age if you remember the One Eyed One Horned Flying Purple People Eater song.

It is intended to be a gift to Daughter #1 as she likes AR's and her favorite color is purple. Thanks very much to GunnyUSMC for the idea.
SEEEEEEEE

now you’re getting it
Seeing some of the posts since I had a chance to get online again it looks like you’ve fallen hard into the AR rat hole.

I came across a place in Richmond that has a bunch of cool AR lowers. Richmond is about an hour from me and I’ll be going there a lot more for work so I’m dreading the hit to my budget as their sale prices are pretty good.

And Yea I was little but I recall the Purple People Eater.
And no no Purple ARs for me but I’d love a red white and blue USA themed one!

Don't go to Aero Precision! Do not look at their "Soaring Freedom" or "The Pledge of Allegiance" builder sets. Resist the urge to build another AR. (Even before I get the scope mounted on my new Valkyrie.) Just don't.

If you do you will be sad they are all sold out.:(;)

My name is Mistwolf. I have built several ARs and plan to build others in the future.

I don't see a problem.

There’s a company called EDC Tactical in Richmond that has a cool website with all sorts of interesting lowers. Now if someone would send me a winning lottery tickets!

Remember this topic.

Well since the last post I acquired all of the parts to finish building my AR #3. After getting the parts I read a post by our chief enabler, GunnyUSMC, about painting the barrel with Aluma-Hyde II from Brownells. I liked the idea so much I ordered the paint. However, the weather got me behind on more important things that needed done so the project has been on hold until this past weekend. I got barrel out and was getting ready to prep it for painting when I decided to compare it to my other carbine barrels as the front sight seems a bit a close to the end of the barrel...

(You know where this is going don't you?)

Yep it is a mid-length gas system barrel.

The company I ordered the barrel from grabbed the wrong barrel off of the shelf and since I was not ready to install it I never looked closely at it after it arrived. The good news is that I want to put a mid-length barrel on the Purple People Eater so the barrel is a keeper.

THE GODS MUST BE CRAZY!

Or telling me something.

I have been toying off and on with the idea of building a pistol. All I will need to do is chose the length of the barrel and handguard.

Or maybe 3 is a unlucky number for me. Ignore #3 altogether and move onto finishing #4. It is ready to be Purple Ceracoated.

I am feeling a little like Charlie Brown right now.

how about something like this for your pistol build. It's only $165

I’m ridding myself of the pistol today. Trading it off. Pistol is fun but will never be more than a toy. Other toys are smaller, not as heavy, and eat less. I may get completely out of .223 soon...to be determined though.

It is possible to stop, and it is possible to go into recession. I WILL NOT part with my 6.8 though.

I sort of thought so too but liked the idea of keeping my options open with every build. To that end, I’ll pin my pistol upper (and brace once I purchase one) to every build from now on before proceeding further. Definitely an incentive to keep at least 1 around.

As for its being a toy, I started really considering different scenarios wherein it might find use. Nearly every man-made event; war, revolution, rioting, home invasion leads back to bug in and hunker down what with food, water, and plenty of weaponry right here and defensible. BUT...that was not every scenario.

Natural disasters, rioters setting fires; these are times which force you to leave the protection of familiar surroundings, and it would be darn handy to lay an AR pistol across your lap in a car vs. wielding even a 16” carbine. Voila, a very practical potential, though not likely, use for a snubby AR.

Lastly they manage to shave weight where it matters, at the furthest point from the body which makes ‘em kid friendlier to practice with. I have a notion my first won’t be my last and that at some point it will actually need a new barrel due to round count. If I didn’t own and couldn’t afford other firearms that might likely come in handy I would ditch the pistol in a heartbeat but I have safes full of other sensible shoes.
