Help me option out an AR-15 in .223

All,

I am interested in purchasing an AR-15 in .223. Primary use will be USPSA rifle matches, etc.

The rifle must be NJ assault weapons friendly which means NO flash suppressor, collapsible stock, bayonette lugs etc. Also, I shoot left handed so I believe I want to go with a true left handed model. Pretty sure I want to go with Stag Arms as they make left handed AR-15's.

I think I want an aluminum free float tube, 18 inch barrel and a flat top receiver. I think the plan would be to mount an Eotech and flip up iron sights. I would want the Eotech mounted so it could be flipped out of the way to use the iron sights. Also maybe a magnifier for the Eotech down the road.

I looked at the Stag Arms website and only the Varmint models appear to come close to my specs, however I am pretty sure you can option these how you like.

Any constructive input would be much appreciated.

I don't have any experience with the 'marksman' style AR's, however I just wanted to comment on the left-handed issue--I am a lefty, and own a DPMS AR-15 which is a righty--And I have NO issues with catching brass in bad places. So don't let a righty gun scare you away from a good rifle and a good deal.

As long as it has a shell deflector. I have a right handed Stag. I am left eyed dominant and shoot long guns left handed and handguns right handed. Some lefties cannot get used to seeing cases flash across their face. I never see any. Resale will limit you with a lefty.

I am in the exact same boat as you. I here what you are saying on the re-sale issue, but I rarely sell my guns.

Can anyone give me some input as to the right specs for USPSA? What is optimal barrel length, type of upper, mandatory accessories etc.

Yes, dont let the left handed rifle limit you, its not a feature you need on an AR-15 style rifle. In the military lefties are taught to shoot right handed, and do just as good. If you decide to go with a right handed rifle the brass deflector prevents close calls with hot brass when shooting left hande. Although the lack of a brass delector doesnt put you directly inline with flying brass either, in my experience the brass still ejects alot farther right than one would guess without a deflector.

Anyone else????????

Can anyone else provide some more feedback. I am most concerned with your opinions on basic specs for a AR-15 style rifle to be used in USPSA. Again I'm in NJ. Let's leave the left hand / right hand issue alone for now, as well as opinions on manufacturers?

Based on what I've seen so far, most of the matches in the area do not seem to go much past 100 yards, but I think I'd like to have the ability to be competitive up to 200 yards to be on the safe side.

What are the basic components I should be considering?

I'm not familiar with the USPSA rules. Most of the military high power rifles matches require a free float tube that maintain the look of the stock handguards. Rock River National Match rifles and Bushmaster DCM rifles have such handguards.

Your best bet is to talk to a few people that shoot your local matches and see what fits their rules and what most people are using.

Rock River uppers have a backorder over 20 weeks right now (it was 20 weeks on 12/31 when they quit giving estimates).
