Bought and sold a pile of guns over the last 30 years.

Regretted many of the sells, very few regrets on the buy side.

I buy with the mindset they are investments or they are shooters/carrying firearms. The collectors have always outweighed the shooters by a pretty fair margin.

At the moment, I'm collecting older [ 40's to 70's ] K22 Smith Masterpieces specifically and anything revo by smith thats going up now and will continue to grow in value through the years [ like I've always done with firearms ].

Recently picked up a beautiful 70's 28, 81 586, Colt LW commander from 78 like new and a 62 nickel mod 10 thats NIB with the box and papers in the last few months.

Shooters in that same time include an xd45 service and another Norinco sks.

I only regulalry use the glock 17's and 26, now the xd45. The rest, as they say, are resting comfortably.

Everything needs to have a purpose and get used, or I'll get rid of it. I could have 100 guns if they all served a purpose and were used regularly, but the sweet spot for me is about five guns:

  • carry gun
  • backup carry gun
  • range .357
  • range 9mm
  • .22

I only have 4, I shoot them all, and don't plan to buy anymore.(yeah, sure)
~18" 870 wingmaster (King of the house)
~4" 586 nickel (queen of the house)
~polished 642 snubbie (for camping and fishing)
~Browning BDA .380 (a sweet little semi)

~oh yeah, my 30 year old 783 marlin .22 mag (varmints)

I've bought and sold for years. Realistically, no regrets. Kind of like trading horses. I have hung onto some though. Mostly nice ones that I got for a price I just couldn't duplicate if I sold it off to buy something else.

I have also bought new unfired, or used excellent condition with very good intentions of using and enjoying it. Yet have not shot them... yet.

Some rifles and pistols I have shot just after getting them, then clean them, and put it up. May be years before I shoot them again.

I have only one I don't shoot. Working on selling it.
Except, I have 2 collector editions that need to be given another home....When you reach a certain age, you realize you can't take them with you....:)

I agree with Dr. Bob in that I won't buy a gun (collectable or not) that I wouldn't consdier shooting.I am not a collector, I think of myself as more of an accumulator.

Having said that some of my favorite guns to shoot are not particularly collectable or fashionable in a tactical / combat sense.

I love my Beretta M84 bb, 13 rounds of .380, cocked and locked, nice size. I know .380 isn't very high up on the stopping power scale but who wants get shot 13 times with one.
Smith M15 2 inch barrel. the most accurate snubby I have had, and fun.

I sell them if I need too, but mostly I just try to have fun with them and not worry about what's in, cool, collectable etc.

Hate to admit, but I don't shoot my XD.45 very much. Nothing wrong with the gun, it is just that all my others are more fun to me. For high-cap needs, I just automatically grab my Para.

I'm still not selling it though, hell no...

As long as I have room in my safe it doesn't cost one dime to keep them. the only gun I own right now that I would sell is a Llama .380 and that sucker's been on borrowed time since it followed DW home from the gun show.

every one of my guns are "working" guns, they are reliable, accurate, and ready at any time to be used if need be. if i don't shoot/ run the gun alot, i get rid of it. if they won't run and/ or they are unreliable they are gone.

I refuse to own a gun I wont or dont shoot.
I had a BEAUTIFUL S&W M27-2 Nickel 5" in presentation box... all paperwork and tools.
I got it at a good price, and it only had about a box of shells put thru it.
I found that I didnt shoot it and sold it off.
I made a nice profit and someone got a pretty much new N frame smoth that looked as much like a piece of art as it did a gun.
The money from that bought my carry .44 and a few other things.

I break my collection into five groups:
First are the shooters. These are serious competition guns and their backups. I've sold a few, usually regretted it.
Second are the defense guns. These see less use. Sold more of these.
Third are the heirlooms. Not for sale.
Fourth are collectibles. Not really for sale...unless I could upgrade. A cased set of original flint duellers top the Want List.
Finally there are the dedicated investment pieces. These will go for sale when profitable.

Clear out

I collect firearms. However,it got to be so ridiculous.A good deal ,is only a
good deal,if you shoot it ! Some time back,I went through my collection, especially through the guns I had never shot, and sold them.

No real priceless collectors.I also went through all the mouse calibers,as I
call them, and sold all of the small calibers, except my .22 's.I had two of each in some guns! So, I had a big sell off,and now it's great to have the extra room,in case I see a new gun in a caliber I really like.Basically,if it wasn't a viable
defensive caliber,I got rid of it.

Have only ever sold or traded away 3 maybe 4 firearms. I have plenty that I've never shot, maybe 20 or so and some I'll never shoot (6 or 7). Doesn't mean I have to get rid of them. I can enjoy them just sitting there.

My modern guns, I shoot at least once in a while. The ones that came down through the family like my grandfather's and my father's shotguns, the Walther .22 rifle that my uncle brought back from WWII and even my first gun, a Savage .22/.410 that my father gave me on my 11th Christmas stay locked up except when I fondle and clean them.

Didn't use a couple of them, sold them to buy something that I would use. Love what I have now :)

After selling a Heritage Rough Rider 22LR/22Mag and regretting it, I am VERY leary of selling any guns unless I flat out don't like them. Even if they aren't shot very often. For example, I have a S&W Model 14 that I haven't shot in 1 year and a half, but I would never part with it.

I have a Czech CZ-52 that I haven't shot in a couple of years. When The spring comes I might order a whole bunch of corrosive eastern bloc 7.62X25 Tok ammo shoot the gun again. I have to get over my fears of shooting corrosive ammo. The Sellier and Bellot I had been shooting in the handgun was much too expensive.

I have two shootguns that I got from my grandfathers in the late 1980's. I have shot both before. One has a cracked stock. The other is fine. I also have a Springfield 45/70 [I think]. It is stamped 1884. Has a cracked stock but would LOVE to shoot that.

I would never outright sell a gun unless I absolutely had to, I would much rather trade it for another gun I want as it seems you get a lot more value in a trade versus selling it. Many times guys will trade a higher end gun or throw in ammo or whatever just b/c you have the gun they want and you can get more for your gun than if you were to sell it. Case in point, I went to the local pawn shop just to check out there cheapo shot to hell shotguns, beater rifles and way overpriced handguns. As I'm looking, the guy standing there next to me goes "there's my browning citori shotgun", a really nice 12 ga autoloader that looked like it was brand new. He said they gave him $200 for it, then slapped a $975 price tag on it.... I wanted to ask the guy if he had a meth problem or if he was an idiot, but refrained and just told him he'd been better off to sell it privately....

Having a gun I couldn't shoot would be like being married to Miss America and having seperate bedrooms. I am not a collector or investor. All my guns are shooters, even my 1932 Colt Police Positive. The only gun I have a sentimental attachment to is a Remington 514 .22 rifle. My Dad gave it to me in 1962. The rest are tools and toys.
