I've been looking to buy a .22 rifle for a while but am not sure what to get. I was considering a Savage Model 64 since my first gun ever was it's bolt action counterpart..the Mark II. I'm just looking for an acurate semi. Not looking to change stocks or do all that fancy crap that ppl do with 10/22s. Just need something to plink with.

Anyone have any comments about the 64? Or maybe another rifle you might suggest me looking at?

My all time favorite 22 rifle is the Marlin 39A.
I also like the Browning Auto 22.
If money is tight it is hard to beat a Marlin Model 60.

auctionarms.com check out the rem 597. great little gun with the big rifle feel. its the tightest shooting 22 out there for cheap. remember your talking about 22longs a 50yrd to 75yrd round. the rem will hang with any of them. ive owned them all at one time or another and loved most all of them. not a big fan of the 10-22 but i do have one. for the buck you cant go wrong with the remmy 597 auto loader

With .22LR rifles, you GOTTA give us a price-range. Marlin Mod. 60s are the best rifle for the money on God's green earth. There should be one in every home in the U.S. If you don't have one - start there. I have two. They both work fine and shoot accurately.

If you want to spend more, the sky's the limit.

ETA: And since nobody else said it yet, welcome to the forum!

the marlin 60 really is Americas 22. man there are just so many to choose from in all different price ranges. take your time look at as many as you can. then come back with your top three or four mods.

Another nod for the 60

About twice as much but the CZ 452 is a very nice and accurate gun

Been reading quite a few good things about the Remington Model 5 since it's been turning up for around 200.00 bucks

Who says you HAVE to do anything to a Ruger 10/22? I've found they're more than accurate enough for anything I've ever expected a 22 to do, like squirrel hunting or plinking right out of the box. You might want to do some trigger work on them, but you can say that about most any gun, right out of the box, especially one you pay around $200.00 for. And with the 10/22 you can buy the parts to do it yourself. You can get high capacity magazines if you want them. I never have. I figure what I gain in shooting longer, I lose reloading so it about evens out (I know, you can buy gizmo's to speed up reloading hi-cap magazines, but I figure they're just something else to lug around.). Add an inexpensive scope, and a sling, and you're ready to go.

Now, if you ever decide you WANT to do anything to a 10/22 the sky is the limit.

The Remington 597 is another good choice. Same thing applies to it that I said about the 10/22 really.

I've had a blast with my Mark II. The accutrigger and the fact that it's a bolt action make it one of the most accurate 22LR's you can buy for the price.

I paid 130$ new for mine and I free floated the barrel with some sand paper and it's very accurate. The only gripe that I had about it was that it came with a canted front sight out of the box, and you need a sight adjustment tool to fix it.
You can spend 220$ for a 10/22 but it's not going to be as accurate for the price of the Mk II.

The CZ series is a very good rifle, but it's about 400$.

I like my Henry lever-action. Last outing, used a ten-year-old $20 airgun scope and Golden Bullet bulk pack to get a .75" group at 50 yards. :D

Could probably do better, with a good rest and better ammo.

I have a Ruger 10/22; my brother has a Marlin 60. His looks nicer IMO, and doesn't need a magazine, but I like the shorter (?) feel of the 10/22 grip (so hard to explain) and have a 25 rd magazine for it. His 60 was pretty accurate out of the box, I believe. Haven't shot mine yet, though the last 10/22 I did I had good luck with. Of course, the 60 should also be less expensive.

I'd think about feel, then loading style, then price. Keep in mind the Savage will have a magazine sticking out the bottom, and I don't believe it has the AccuTrigger. Someone with more experience than me suggested staying away years ago, could be different now.

czarjl..i'm really not planning on any mods. a scope and bipod, that's it. one thing that i will give you, that's different from the marlin mod 60 is that it has clips. that's an important thing since reloading is faster than with a tube mag. still i like the fact that i can get a savage 64 for less than 150.

marlin is the best , most accurate tube fed. Otherwise, i would look at a marlin 795, or remmy for semiauto's, or the savage, that are all mag fed.

Go with your first choice. Tubular magazines are faster to reload. You also don't loose the magazine and have to buy another. For most folks, the tubular magazine just doesn't look as nice as a clip fed gun.

Another good choice would be the Thompson Center R-55. They are well know for very good out of the box accuracy. They are just a bit more expensive.

I have a 10/22, a fun gun. Out of the box the trigger needs needs a hair bit of work. You can buy the VQ hammer for $30 or take a file to your stock hammer (which I did to get pull ~2.5-3lb), its very simple. No reason you have to mod, its a nice gun. I've been buying 30round mags for $10.95 and bought some 50rounders for $22, found some used 25rd ones cheap before also. I think the Rem 597 is probably a nice value also, but 22round mags are double the cost of 30round ones for the 10/22. Pretty much the same deal with a Marlin 795. When we go out shooting the passenger always loads all the 22, ak, ar, mags during the drive. Thats the problem with the rem 597 and marlin 795 to me, if you want extra mags the 10/22s are so much of a better deal, and if your not buying mags why not get a marlin 60. I would recommend the marlin 60 or ruguer 10/22, the 60 if you don't want to bother with mags, the 10/22 as the best option of rifles that have mags. I've been waiting to find a model 60, they have been popping up for $60-70 used, I am usually to slow to get them. 10/22s hold better value.

do you have probs. with buttler creek mags ? i do.i went to a ram line and so far so good little more money for the ram and alittle harder to find in omaha N.E.

or take a file to your stock hammer (which I did to get pull ~2.5-3lb), its very simple. No reason you have to mod, its a nice gun.

:eek::eek: I assume you meant, take a stone to polish your stock hammer, rather than a file, which would remove metal.
