Hello Folks, :)

last night i went to walmart and they had 4 .22lr rifles

Mossberg Plinkster 702 $114
Savage Mark II $140
Savage 64 $117
Ruger 10/22 $189

i own a Savage Mark II and it's very accurate (.5moa at 50 yards) i'm very happy with it but i want a semi 22lr and i was wondering if the savage 64 is as accurate as the Mark II serie?

the other think is that the ruger you can change everything on it, new barrel, stock and there are Hi-Cap mags for it...but what kind of accuracy i can expect from a stock ruger at 50/100 yards? are they ammo picky?

i dont have anything to say about the Mossberg 702 because i have never fire or handle one before yesterday any comments?

I've been teaching hunter education for a few years now. In that time I've seen hundreds, if not a thousand 22's. My opinion? Get the 10-22.

They do seem to not like some of the bulk ammo(like the american eagle from federal). But i think that's the ammo, not the gun. Almost every time one hiccups on it, it's a short stroke due to weak recoil impulse from the low powered round.

The others you mentioned have too much tendency to hang up ragardless of ammo.

Also, if you want to play around, the 10-22 is the rifle version of the 1911 accessory wise.

I've got a few 10-22s in the stable. They all hold an inch at 50 yards if I do my part. They may be better with good glass on top. but with 2 exceptions they all have stock iron sights. Of those 2, one has a millet red dot, the other has a cheap scope on it.

You can probably expect about 1"-2" accuracy at 50 yds with a stock 10/22. You might get lucky and get one that shoots an inch (that's 2 MOA more or less). If you want accuracy, look at the Thompson Center R-55. It is a man sized rifle. Some have jamming problems or used to. Keep it clean and it will treat you right after it's broke in. Everything I read suggests that the ocassional jamming ceases after around 500 rounds. You can expect 1 MOA with the rilfe (that's 1/2" groups) or better. I have one of the R-55 predacessors and it does jam sometimes, but I get sub-0.5" groups with average standard velocity ammo.

Don't know anything about the Savage Model 64. The Marlin Model 60 is an excellent inexpensive rimfire rifle that shoots. It of course sports a tubular magazine.

My buddy bought a used Mossberg Plinkster for $75 and loves it! It's a tack driver as well.

I like the Marlin Model 60 or Ruger 10/22

Bone-stock 10/22 is quite accurate with the right ammo. Mine likes CCI Stingers and Remington Thunderbolt. I can put 'em in the black out to 75 yards with a receiver-mounted peep sight.

10/22's will be finicky feeders if cheap/lousy magazines are used

I have a plinkster and while it's real accurate (about 2inch out to 75-100yds or so with the cheap scope), it's a pain in the ass to take apart because of the recoil spring and guide. Other than that it has been very reliable except on one time of using Remington Gold crap ammo from WM. Ever since I have used American Eagle and/or Thunderbolts, its been good to go and stone reliable. And since taking it apart is such a PITA, let me rephrase that, putting it back together is the PITA.

Marlin 60. I know you didn't list it, but I'm still going to reccomend. I shot 3 inch groups with it at 75+ yards and I suck.
