I have discovered that the M1 carbine mag pouches fit the magazines to my Rem 740- I have seen photos in the past depicting M1s in the field with this pouch attached to the rifle stocks with a male button attached to the wood of the stock. I would like to reproduce this use on the 740, can anyone help me find out what kind of snap to look for? are there special ones for wood? does the local hardware store have them or is it a specialty item that would be found online?
thanks for any assistance!

Some (not all) of the M1 Carbine pouches have an opening at the back wide enough to slip over the carbine stock. I have never seen or heard of any snap or button on the stock itself.

I don't know if one would slip over the Remington stock or not, but you can easily try.

Yeah, the mag pouch was a bit of GI innovation, slipping the issue belt magazine pouch onto the stock for a couple handy mags on the gun.

Yeah, the m1 carbine magazine pouch often seen slipped over the buttstock of the gun was designed to slip over a broad web belt. Adapting the pouch to the stock is typical GI ingenuity.

Hardware stores sell kits for installing snaps.

For installing snaps into wood, go to a marine supply store.

They sell snap kits for attaching snaps for canvas and plastic windows to boats.

Fastener supply companies and particularly marine supply companies sell snaps with a screw to mount them.

You can simply screw one to the stock.
However, this won't be all that secure, since the weight will tend to pull the pouch right off easily.
A possibly better option would be one of the magazine/ammo pouches that's designed to attach to a stock with a Velcro strap or elastic loop.

Check manufacturers like Blackhawk, Eagle, and other nylon gear makers.

I did this with my Marlin Camp 9. I had a bunch of the patent leather police double magazine pouches, so I ran some elastic through the slits on the back and sewed the ends together. It shifts around a little, but it is nice to knew that if I ever have to pick the gun up and use it, I have extra ammunition, just in case.
