there are cheaper out there than .223. Any surplus or other intermediate caliber is going to be lower in price.

But, it makes a great all-round caliber if you do your part. It fits in any of the conventional roles of a rifle or carbine, given the proper platform and the proper ammo selection.

The .223 is a very versitile round and easy to aquire. Are you looking for a rifle application or AR? It is a good round for anything smaller than deer as far as hunting.

As far as hunting goes I wouldn't hunt deer w/ a .223. It can be done, but some states have laws against it, and it isn't really ideal for large game. .308 and .30-06 aren't much more expensive in factory ammo and would work much better on large game.

Mosins and saigas also have cheap ammo. 7.62x39 would work on deer, you'd have to buy decent loads for hunting, but you could get cheap plinking ammo too.

I'd say that a .223 can take whatever a 7.62 Soviet round can take. But, that is just me. It is certainly not a good long-range hunting cartridge unless you're varminting, but dropping a human-sized animal (like a deer or...err...person) with .223 within normal hunters' range is certainly not something that requires anything but the same shot placement you'd use with any full-sized rifle caliber.

Mostly, when I shoot, I kill time and punch paper. I recently bought both a CZ-452 Varmint in 17 HMR and a CZ-527 Varmint in 223. Both shoot MOA with factory loads, and are great fun to shoot without breaking (but require a bit of hard shaking) the bank.

An excellent and accurate calibre. In a bolt gun You should consider the Stevens model 200 .Avery accurate rifle right from the box,and priced under $300.In states where they can be used for deer,I would recomend the 60 grn.Nosler Partition or the 64 grn Winchester Power Point.

I love the caliber, personally. It won't "do it all", but it has plenty of uses.

I killed a large buck whitetail in Montana with a 69gr .223 Sierra HPBT shot right into the lungs/heart. It dropped immediately. I don't understand why people say .223 isn't good for deer inside 150 yards or so with good shot placement.

Some states have laws against hunting with .308 or 30-06 as well... Does it mean that those calibers cannot get the job done?

I am considering using the .223 Remington for my doe deer tag this year. This decision is related to my recovering from neck surgery. I will be using an old mint condition Savage 111 with Federal 55 grain Trophy bonded Bear Claw. I would try to limit my shots to 200yds or less.

The .223 for deer hunting has been beat to death. DNR typically uses .22LR to drop a deer in urban settings (inside of 30 yards) so .223 is more than adequate. In contrast, I helped my neighbor flush a deer he shot in the gut with a 12 ga. slug.

Caliber is a factor but shot placement is more important.

But, if I got shot in the head with one, I might change my mind.

.223 for deer is fine if your shot placement is perfect. But hit a shoulder and it's spotty at best. The ammo also isn't that much cheaper than the bigger centerfire calibers. I see .223 at $13 a box retail, and I see .308 at $20 a box. Unless you're going to shoot alot, that's not a substantial jump in cost for a round that is much more reliable on medium sized game.

to be quite honest with you, it is one of the 10 staple rounds you must have
in a rifle. simply becuase there is so much of it around, and you can get it anywhere, and it is made everywhere.
