I am in Tucson until the 9th of August. What do you locals recommend as the shops to visit? I should confess that my guilty pleasures are 100+ year old topbreak revolvers. Yes, I brought copies of my C&R. ...And, yes, I did come down to Tucson in August to get out of the heat. Last week in Seattle was just an exercise to get myself ready.

I've been in most of the larger gun shops in Tucson and no one seems to have a great inventory of guns, new or old. But one of the friendliest, largest and most helpful bunch of guys I've run across so far are at Diamondback Police Supply, 170 S Kolb Rd, Tucson, AZ 85710, (520) 886-8338. Their website is here ... but it really under represents their store which I like a lot, and at which I bought several weapons: http://www.diamondbackpolice.net/ They also finger printed me for my CCW permit application.

If you want to see a nicer inventory of NEW weapons (handguns and long guns) in a store in which you can spend a day just looking around, find your way to Sportsman's Warehouse on Costco Drive just North of the Home Depot also on Costco Drive. Try and find "Steve" if you can at the gun counter. Great guy, truly knowledgeable too. Likes to visit and is quite helpful. But the store is also full of hunting / shooting accessories, camping, climbing, bow hunting gear, ... well it really is something to see. I picked up a pair of S&W 637s with CT Grips from these guys this spring. Prices are nothing special but they are fair enough.

Other places to consider visiting:

Tucson Guns and Western Artifacts, small but interesting
http://www.tucsonguns.net/

Murphy's Guns, small but interesting

2nd Amendment Sports is large, and has a lot of stuff.

Thanks, I'll try to convince my daughter that it would be worth taking a break to check out a couple of these.

Thunderstik trading co. is a neat little shop, nice folks too. They are the cowboy action suppliers in Tucson far as I can tell. They're at speedway/jefferson (just east of craycroft) 520-290-8599

Murphys is worth the trip for the antiques on the wall, that are not for sale. :) Stay away from Jerrys like he has the plague. Also, Next to Second Amendment should be a littl shop called West O the Pecos guns, neat little place.

West O the Pecos is gone. It's now a shop called the armory. It's ultra modern and they specialize in EBRs. It was kinda creepy when I went there.

i third murphy's. staff are great and they have some interesting pieces here and there. prices aren't amazing, but a lot of the pistols especially are at least 30-40 cheaper than some other shops. it is on country club rd bout 50m north of ft lowell next to the circle k.

nobody mentioned the marksman pistol institute. nothing really of merit as far as shopping goes, but they have a few guns for rent that you can shoot, and unless i'm mistaken (please correct me) they have the only indoor ranges in the city limits.

2nd amendment has a pretty big inventory and a few things worth checking out. sportsmen's is mostly newer pieces last i was in there, but the inventory size is huge

isn't there an indoor range there in tucson?

I went there one night to kill an evening - rented a couple of guns

Can't remember the name though.... they were nice enough, public range, okay selection.

ya, marksman pistol institute (there are two locations). dunno how long ago you were talking bout however. to my knowledge it is just those two, supposedly there was a 3rd up east but closed. not 100% bout that

Two indoor ranges last time I was there, BOTH are Marksman, One on 29th st between Craycroft and Swan, and Two at Flowing Wells and Prince. That was the one I worked at when it was Jensen's. They rebuilt the range FAR better than it was as J-Mart.

is II better than I? gonna go shootin again soon and i've only been to MPI I, i wanted to try MPI II but not if it is inferior to the 1st one

The ranges are very similar to each other, but the folks that run the Marksman II at prince/ft lowell are more friendly. I recommend going there.
