Just beginning the learning processs. Recently picked up a Model 70 and needed magazines. Found a couple at a gun show that are too "short" for my Government. They have Colt 45 on the base along with the horse and an "M" stamp. Which Colt model(s) are a match for these mags?

Gun show mags are a real risk. Most don't work.

A series 70 is more magazine sensitive than the latest production models.

I strongly urge you to buy Genuine Colt 7 round magazines (the Colt 8 rounders have different feed lips that don't work well with all series 70 guns) from Brownells. Any other place that I tried to buy Colt mags turned out to be fake.

Another alternative is CheckmateIndustries.com. Checkmate makes magazines for Colt ( a "C" on the bottom) and also sells magazines under their own name. Get the USGI feed lips or hybrid feedlips.

The Feedlips are the important factor.

Another vote for not getting those cheapy gun show mags. I really like the Metalform branded 7 rounders or the wilson 47d's. You really do get what you pay for. I'd say my experience with those "45 Colt" branded knock offs, is for every 10 you buy,one might work, sometimes.

Thanks for the input guys. Found someone local who knows Colts well and he comfirms they are for the Officers model and, as luck would have it, original Colt in good shape. Guess I'll just have to buy an Colt Officer to fit my mags.
