my question for you brains out there is: will any colt 45 nm barrel drop in or fit in a 1967 colt government model 1911???

i have a wtb post out there for one right now. but not sure if it will work in my gun... someone told me only a 60's nm barrel will work. because the 70's have a narrower barrel mouth...

Most 1911 parts require fitting of some kind. Match parts tend to be left oversize to allow for the smith to get the fit just right.

So, it might drop in and it might need work. The other problem is getting the barrel link to be the right length.

By nm, do you mean 'new model' or 'national match'?

A national match barrel (and bushing) will need to be fitted to the gun by a 'qualified' gunsmith. It's not really a do-it-yourself project.

A new model (whatever that means) barrel should drop right in, but without a bushing that's fitted to the barrel, accuracy will just be 'the luck of the draw'.

The Series '70 barrels had a collet bushing and the outside diameter of the muzzle was slightly larger to fit the bushing. If you find a Series '70 barrel and bushing set they should just drop right in.

The last Colt 1911A1 barrel I "shot-out" was replaced with a "drop-in" Springfield barrel (purchased from Midway). No fitting was needed.
It went into this pistol:

i was looking for but now have bought a 1960's colt 45 nm "national match" {for those out there that may be confused and are not familiar with 1911 jargon} barrel.

and yes me and all that knows half of anything about 1911 knows that new match barrels are usually oversized and need fitting

my origanal question at hand was referring to the 60's model colt national match barrels. marked "colt 45 nm" on top of them...

the person i bought the barrel from said that the 60's era colt nm barrel i purchased from him should just drop in to my 67 colt 1911 gov model... he said that there probibly wouldnt need any fitting. minner if any...

i tend to bellieve him, he seems pretty savy, and also seeing he runs a store that sells 60's model 1911 colt 45 nm barrels, and other items of that said era. i meen how many others deal in such items. believe me ive been looking... oh and he is also a gunsmith

buy the way... NICE pic mmitch..... thats a good looking pistol

Hello, I am not a "brain" or a gunsmith but I'll give this a shot. You may find that the barrel hood width is different if your NM barrel is from one of the the pre '70 Gold Cup or later national match/Gold Cup guns. If your barrel is one of the older military or gunsmith NM barrels it will have the correct hood width. Gold cups, the Enhanced series and the New Roll Mark guns all use a narrower barrel hood than your '67 gun. I have owned a number of '70 series Gold cups and one '80 Series. beyond ensuring proper function. I saw no evidence those "Match" barrels were fitted in any way. If your NM barrel does have the narrower hood, it will likely go into your gun, but you'll notice an unusually large gap on the left side of the hood. Within my experience, most barrels have good enough interior dimensions to give good accuracy. What truly makes the difference, is the fitting of the external surfaces of the barrel to the slide and frame so that the barrel returns to exactly the same position each time the pistol is fired. As an aside, seems like most aftermarket barrels now days are advertised as "Match" or Match grade no matter how losely they fit... Please let us know how it works out.

I agree with Rock.
The S70 and S80 Gold Cup National Match barrel definitely has a narrower hood than a Government Model and I think the 1957-1969 guns do too.

But now that you have bought one, what are you seeing?

well i have yet to recieve the item. just purchased it yesterday, so should have it by monday. hopefully. i will for sure post what i find when i get it in and up alongside my old one. i was trying to find something out on the subject and there is about squat out there to tell someone... so i intrusted my concerns to THE HIGH ROAD, and also 1911 forum.

im not new to the game nor is this my first 1911, but i know there is alot of people out there that know alot more than me on this particular subject. but you still get the ones out there that seem to know nothing more than 1st grade stuff.

to everyone that is posting about colt 45 nm (pre 70's, 70's 80's) and comparable barrels. i do appreciate the info.
