As the topic states, what would be on YOUR ultimate .22, if money wasnt a big factor? reason i ask is that with the whole turning 18 thing, i want to go out and excersize my new gun rights and buy a .22, but i want to customize it out a little to be super accurate. what would you guys do?? what platform would you start with and what mods would you do??

got mine built.
Ruger 10/22
VQ Carbon Fiber THM Barrel with 32-hole comp
VQ TG2000
VQ Cantilever barrel mounted scope
Weaver 6-20X40mm Grand Slam
VQ Extractor
Bell and Carlson Anschutz style stock.
...wait...with all I spent... I coulda just bought an Anchutz and gotten the same results...but where would be the fun in that!!besides it's a semi-auto.

I'd probably build off a 10/22 since it is probably the most popular .22 rifle out there.

Assuming money isn't a factor and building off a complete, factory out of box rifle:

1. Volquartsen barrel. I have the Stainless Steel Match 20" match barrel w/ compensator. I'd probably get the same again, but with flutes.

2. Kidd Trigger. (http://www.coolguyguns.com/match_trigger.htm). If you buy this, there is no need to buy Volquartsen internals to lighten the trigger pull, have the auto bolt release, and extended mag release features.

3. McMillan Sportsman Team Challenge (STC) stock.

4. Assuming going with Volquartsen barrel, get a Volquartsen Barrel Mounted Scope base.

5. A decent piece of glass. Find something along the lines of Burris, Weaver, or Leupold.

#1 will probably cost $300, #2 $300, #3 $600, #4 + #5 anywhere from $250-$400 depending on the scope. So including the $175 for the initial rifle, this would be a pretty expensive project at around $1700.

If you want reasonable parts recommendations for the 10/22?

1. Any Green Mountain or Volquartsen barrel should be ok. I haven't purchased GM before but everyone says they're the best bang for the buck. I've owned two VQ barrels (THM and SS Match w/ comp) and I loved them both. You will spend anywhere from $100-$300 depending on what you go with.

2. Get the Volquartsen Auto Bolt Release, Extended Mag Release, and Target Hammer. This should only be about $50-75 or so.

3. You can get the Hogue Overmold Stock, which is a bargain stock for $75 or so. I'd look into the Bell and Carlson Anschütz stocks. I'm thinking about getting one. It runs for about $200.

4. As far as scope bases, I like the barrel mounted design. It's just a personal pref. Some people argue both ways for receiver or barrel mounted scope bases.

5. Don't skip on glass. Your scope should be a significant purchase. No point on spending so much money on a rifle and then put a POS scope on it. I went with a Burris 4-12x32 Compact Scope with Side Parallax adj for my 10/22 and Leupold QR rings on a VQ barrel mounted base.

Sactown: You posted while I was still writing my post. How do you like the B&C stock? I'm thinking about getting one to replace my ghetto Hogue Overmold. And are you free floating the entire barrel, or did you bed the first few inches of the barrel?

Buy a Kimber .22 with a AAA-grade English walnut stock. Add a threaded barrel, can, Leupold 3-9x40mm VX-II, and an NV setup and that would be my ideal.

I'd start with the EAA imported Biathlon Basic, mount some nice glass and replace the stock with a custom made one to fit me for off-hand shooting and still have a nice place to rest on bags or mount a bipod for bench work.

If it still wasn't custom enough I'd get a carbon fiber tension barrel to lighten weight and give it a little extra "cool factor".

Actually this is what I'm planning on doing, and since I've already pushed the envelope of my "buying power" I'd make an attempt at carving the stock myself. I can always put the old one back on and if turns out well I can claim credit :D

Ruger 10/22 FORCE Reciever
Lilja bull barrel
Bell and Carlson Oddyssey stock
Kidd trigger
Leupold VariXIII 6.5-20x40AO rifle scope
Talley rings
Volquartsten base
Gemtech outback
muzzle threaded 1/2 x 28

+pillar bedding

Priceless..

Well while on the subject of .22's. I recently purchased a ruger 77/22. Any ideas for that? Not nearly as many upgrades as the 10/22 but I wanted a bolt action.

My Dad just performed his own trigger job on his and it made a ton of differance. I'd start with the trigger and then determine what else you want out of the gun (lighter weight, more accuracy, more comfortable, cool looks, etc . . . ).

Hmm....my ultimate would be the following:

1. Volquartsen Superlite 10/22 receiver

2. Volquartsen Triggerguard 2000

3. Volquartsen competition bolt assembly

4. Volquartsen carbon fiber barrel with integral suppressor

5. Volquartsen barrel mounted scope base

6. Bell & Carlson BR-50 target stock

7. Leupold Vari-X III 6.5-20x40mm Adj. EFR Target

8. Harris BRMS Bipod

9. Leupold QRW mounts and rings

That should cover it. :D Would also love a really nice Winchester 52

I'm partial to CZ's. Not as much aftermarket junk, but they don't need alot of modifications to be accurate. Get a 452 in your choice of stock or barrel conifgurations and spend the rest on a good scope.

I also have an IZH Biathlon Basic. They are REALLY accurate. CDNN has them for $209 right now. I bought mine locally for $239. Apparently the same action with a different stock is used by the Russians as a small bore sniper system. The versions with sights and true Biathlon stocks are competitive Biathlon guns which have to be very accurate.

Either is all-steel. I don't like the alloy receiver of the 10/22's, but people like to customize them.

I too have hear lots of good things about the CZs but not much other than being a CZ to make them stand out ;) I need to get that Biathlon Basic . . . Man, I'm drooling again aren't I. :uhoh: Cheap too, although that's not really a consideration. I want it because it's already mostly what I want.. Even if it were another $100 I'd still want one.

I don't have to built mine--I already have it:cool:

I need another one though.

Ultimate 22?

It would be a minature version of a GE Minigun. 4k round per minute cyclic rate. Would be the cheapest NFA full auto toy to shoot, well atleast on a per round cost. The amount of ammo I'd feed through the thing would probably be enough to cause national stock piles of 22lr. to plumet.

But atleast 4k rounds would only set you back maybe 100 bucks, good for only a minute of firing :) But wouldn't it be great?

Well while on the subject of .22's. I recently purchased a ruger 77/22. Any ideas for that? Not nearly as many upgrades as the 10/22 but I wanted a bolt action.

I like the looks of them myself as they look like real rifles. Savages and other rimfire bolt actions just look like rimfires. I imagine the 77 would still need a trigger job to be shootable.

I want a 77 in .17HMR.

I'm in the process of building mine....sort of. I got the first step down, I bought a rifle.
Its a marlin model 81TS. Nothing super fancy, but stock it shoots as accurate as me. I haven't tried anything with a rest or anything, but I'm happy with it offhand and open sights. Best part is it feeds anything I drop in the tube, so I can smack racoons with mini mags, turn the rear sight down half a turn and shoot remington subsonics for target practice, turn it down another turn and pop off CB longs.
So hopefully this winter, but definitely someday. I'll do the pen spring trigger job on it, and I'll carve my own stock. I was all set to start the stock when I bought the rifle, but I got hung up deciding whether to laminate one, or go solid walnut. Then maybe, I'll consider a scope, but to be honest I really prefer iron sightsfor the time being.
Now I'm too busy with school, horses, and orders for knives I have to make before christmas. It will happen eventually though, least I'm not going to run out of things to do anytime soon :)

Already did it. My son's Christmas present last year. Very little stock parts left on this one. Boyd Ross stock, VQ barrel and all internal parts. Triger worked and barrel free floated by my smith. Weaver Grand Slam scope A/O. Some shoot the Pepsi can at 100 yards, we dot the i in Pepsi.

Ocabje,

I didnt' do any bedding or any tension screws. All I did was screw in those 2 stock screws. The BC stock works great for me. I tried the Fajen Thumbhole Silhoutte but the stock didn't fit me. The BC is very comfortable to shoot.

soo..... with all the great toys you guys have mentioned, what would be the best route to go if i wanted to build a nice tackdriver 10/22 with about 500 bucks to burn , gun and all?? it dont gota be pretty, but accuracy is paramount. keeping in mind a fancy dancy stock aint high on my list of prioritys.

Kimber for bolt.
Ruger for auto.

Have one of each.

Kimber, has nothing done to it, put a Burris on it and it works.

the 10/22 I put a VQ trigger, Hogue Stock, Harris Bi-pod, and currently wearing a BSA scope (I know, I know) It works.

To those that keep saying suppressor.....I want one too.....but not at the price. But if we are talking ultimate.....where can I get my barrel threaded?

I have an old Remington.....

bolt rifle with detachable box magazine. I think it is the 581 or 541?

It shoots rather well. I had the barrel cut off to 18' and sleeved it with an aluminum tube, as the stock barrel looks obscenely skinny. It carries a fixed 4x full size scope. I did my own trigger work and it's light without being treacherous.

If'n I could do it again with more money, I'd get a prettier stock and a real bull barrel. I think a Kimber or Ruger bolt action might be better overall, but this plain Jane Remington has fired a whole lot of various ammo and put them all where I was pointing. There's lots worse to say.
