How would one go about de-activating live ammo, as in, removing the bullet, emptying out the powder, and removing the primer, then putting the bullet back into the case again. What tools are needed to accomplish this. How does one go about this. What risks are there.

You can disassemble complete ammo with this impact hammer.

If you empty out the powder, a few drops of oil in the flash hole will neutralize the primer. Maybe! Oil treat a bunch and then fire some in your gun to reconfirm the primers are dead. Once you're satisfied you can simply reload the empty cases with bullets to make dummy rounds. If however you do have a live primer that still goes off, the bullet will lodge in the barrel just far enough that you have to tap it out with a mallet. Worse yet, if a bullet does lodge, and you don't know it's there, it's a bore obstruction that might burst the barrel on your next shot!

Is this for making dud "dry fire" ammo? A better option is to load snap caps that are actually designed to protect the firing pin of the gun during practice.

Just lower the decapping rod in your resizing/decapping die and PUSH "key word here PUSH" the primer out with your reloading press.

Primers go off from impact not from pressure. Have done it hundreds of times.

Plus you'll still be able to reuse the primers, how bout that.

It's actually being done to turn the ammo into Chess pieces on the cheap. Thanks a lot for the help so far.

New business op !!!

Now there's a business opportunity for you!

Offering cast lead bullets to make chess pieces. All the pawns would be .380, the rooks 9mm, the knights 40, the bishops 223 and the royalty 308's.

:D

Clever... I like the idea.

Your best bet will be to use an impact hammer for this, the collet dies that grab the bullet can leave minor marks on the bullet. That wouldn't look the best for your chess set.

To take apart live ammo, use the inertia bullet puller, and deprime as indicated. It isn't hard or dangerous and all components (assuming you know what they are), can be reused

Awesome, yes I will be taking pics! I am going to do some "jazzing" to the bullets as well, queen will have some grooves cut into the top of the bullet, bishop will have a slant, etc. going to do that with the dremel. Also going to paint the two sides in different colors, probably black and white, high gloss.

I came up with:

Pawn: .45 ACP
Rook: 12 gauge - rook has to be 12gauge, c'mon whats better than 12ga for the big beefy one?
Knight: 7.62x39
Bishop: 30-30
King: 7.62x54r
Queen: 30-06

A lot of different calibers will work, I went with these choices cause the only ammo I'd need would be the x54r Maybe 30-30 if my dad's out of ammo for his rifle gotta ask. If anyone has spare cartridges of these that they'd sell me, it would be awesome.

Very interesting idea, think I might do that instead. My current idea was to make/buy a small wood disk with a felt bottom for each of them.

Is there anyone here that would sell me:

4x 30-30
2x 7.62x54r
2x 30-06

Either complete cartridges, or just a shell with a bullet stuck in it. I would pay shipping and for the items as well.

The best & fastest way to do it would be to put the cartage in the proper chamber, close the action, aim in a safe direction, & pull the trigger.

It would be far cheaper to buy some bullets from Walmart to try to ship live ammo or to buy the equipment. I would suggest finding someone local that reloads these calibers to put them togather after your art is finished.

If you need two 30-06 dummy rounds let me know. I made some for a prop to go with my 30 BMG mounted on my Jeep and I have a couple of extra rounds. These are just fired cases, no primers, with a bullet reloaded into the case. I can mail to you no problem. pm me please if these will help. None of the other calibers.

Can you do a 500 mag for the Rook?

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.

Yep, i can. Just happen to have 2 500 S&W cases and a couple of appropriately sized bullets lying around. I had to find the brass, it got misplaced. Let me know if you want that too and I'll assemble them.

If you are going to pull a lot of bullets as in liken to production, you may want to use a collet puller. Also a lot of military ammo has a sealant around the case mouth that will make the bullet hard to pull. You can use a seater die to force the bullet deeper to break the seal so it will come out easier. Sometimes the crimp will make that impossible too.

I like the paint idea! I have a standard brass/chrome chess set. In good light the pieces are easy to tell the difference. That all changes when light gets bad or your opponent has reduced vision.
I, too, am waiting for pictures!
