A friend knocked the bullet out of a live round ans thought he needed to resize the case bedore loading it again.
He took the depriming pin out and procceded to resize the case with no lube which resulted in a struck case with a live primer in the case.

How would you guys go about removing the case?
I told him to throw it away.

It depends on what brand of dies your friend has. If he can take the expander rod out from the top he could carefully drive the case out of the die from the top using a rod or dowel.

There are ways to remove a stuck case; you tube has many videos on how to do it.

I would remove the decapping stem from the die, remove the die from the press, point the top of the die in a safe direction or into a pail of sand and pop the primer. Then proceed as usual to remove a stuck case with my RCBS stuck case removal tool. If I could find find it. It's been a long time since I stuck a case in a die...
<knock on wood>
Unless it was a Lee die, I would make ecery effort to save the die. Lee's are inexpensive enough that the loss would not upset me very much. Now, one of the Redding dies....

Remove the decapping rod or get it loose, get the powder out of the case if any. Don your safety glasses and gloves and drill out the live primer and use a standard stuck case remover to get the case out.

It is a RCBS resizer die. He dtopped the die off a couple of days ago and I took the stem out like in the video above but that method of putting the die upside down in the press and useing a univerals pin will not work because the neck sizing ball is still in the case.

I guess I will do like Monk wrote, I'll don my weldong golves, safety glasses, face shield & heavy winter coat and just drill it out.

If I do I will set my phone on video and get a video of it to share.

What is it? Depending on what it is and how the die is made it could be quite simple or a bit more difficult. No reason to toss the die, there have been several techniques described, but it depends on what the case and die is. Don’t be afraid of a primer, it’s not a Claymore mine, just pay attention which way you point it and keep your hands and face from the end of the die the charge comes out if it pops.

Maybe because on my machinist/mechanic background, the case in the pic looks like it would be easy to remove. I might use my Lee decapping tool to pop out (remove) the primer, squirt some Kroil around the case and wait over night. Then drive the case out with a brass rod. If that didn't work maybe drilling/tapping the case head for a home made removing tool (bolt/washer/socket). I think either method would work...

Looks like there's enough to grab with channel locks and rip it out. Another option could be some compressed air would push the primer out then you can remove the case with some more brutal techniques .

I do have WD40 i will spray it. I was thinking maybe find a steel rod that will fit in the hole the stud screws in to the die and try tap it out.

WD-40 will not kill a primer. I’d put the die in a press and just drive the mandrel through, it will push the brass out. The depriming pin is already removed, so the primer is not really an issue right now. Loosen whatever is holding the depriming part and just pound it through. Once the case is out you can remove the primer and give him the case to put at eye level on his bench as a reminder.

If you are worried about the primer, suit up in your protective gear and hit that bad boy with a torch. Once the primer pops keep heating the die then shoot some compressed air into the brass and quickly push it out. The heat will expand the die and the cold air will shrink the brass. Should make a cool video.

Tests have been done on killing primers, normal household items like kroil and WD-40 won't reliably do it. Primers are fairly harmless if they are vented away from hands and faces, you can detonate it or drill it out safely as long as it's away from yourself.

If it were mine, I'd detonate the primer and then drill it out.

Throw it into a deep freeze for a couple of hrs, then heat up to 100-120F. Then repeat. Since the 2 metals have different expansion values it should loose the brass up enough to get out. Apply some Kroil around the brass before you start. This will help in penetrating the lubricant. Then try grabbing the brass and spin it out,

I had this happen to me not too long ago. You said the neck expander ball is still inside the case? Have him try to drop the depriming pin down through the case neck and into the expander ball (might take a "few" tries). Then thread the decapping stem back in (again, might take some fiddling to accomplish). Now you can use the decappng rod to carefully press out the live primer. Since the case is already in the die though, you'll have to get creative to press it out (i used a threaded wood clamp to press it out).

I went to the hardware store and bought a 10-32 bolt, cut the head off of it and slid it into the die & 223 case.
I bought a 3/8 -32 bolt and threaded it in to the die and took a 9/16 wrench and screwed it down and it pushed the case right out easy/peasy.

Now I have to cut the garbage 223 case with my cut-off grinder to get the expander ball back.

It was so much easier this way then drilling it out, threading the case and useing a 1/4-20 bolt and a socket.
