I am preparing to pack things up for about 8 months or more, not sure when I will be starting back up again, or in what state.

I plan to pack up each tool item and all of the attachments/pcs for that tool into large Ziploc bags with a light coat of rust preventing oil. This includes dies. They will go into a big plastic tub and into a climate controlled storage unit along with brass and bullets.

All powder and primers will go to my father in law for keeping with his stuff until I can retrieve it. Loaded ammo with go with powder/primers, all clearly labeled and in ammo cans.

Does this storage plan make sense? My goal is to make sure my stuff works after a move and being hidden away for a while.

What is an easy to remove but effective rust preventer for my dies/tools?

Thanks

When things say store in a cool dry place just do it. A light coat of oil on things like dies won't hurt but you are not talking long term as in 5 years plus storage. You are looking at less than a year. I also like the large Tupperware tubs once things are packed. If it is a high humidity environment toss in some desiccant bags.

If I was in this situation, since I have a foodsaver, I would put a light coat of oil on, and then put as many things as I could in foodsaver bags and suck all the air out. That's just me.

The last time I had to do that I dipped all my dies in some Amsoil MP. Placed them back in the storage boxes wet, did not wipe then down. Some dies were calibers that I no longer owned. I opened some of those up after 20+ years of storage. No Rust any where. It did take some good cleaning to to remove the dried on residue MP left behind. But it did a good job of protecting the metal.

Definitely spray all the metal with WD 40 Specialist. Be sure to get the Specialist. It is a lot more $ than the regular but it is a lot better for rust proofing. It is suppose to last a year.

I like Birchwood Casey's BARRICADE RUST STOP--
I have had weapons in gun safe for 3 years coated with Barricade & they show no rust

Ballistol for rust resistance. Spray on a light coat and blot off any excess. Just wipe things down when you get them out again. Sealing in air-tight bags will help a lot, too.

Thanks for the responses. I like hr vacume saver idea

I keep a lot of stuff that I'm not using immediately in old Mobil 1 bottles that I've cut the top off of. I wipe everything down with Mobil 1 on a paper towel, wad the paper towel up and put it in the bottom of the bottle and put the stuff I'm storing in the bottle. Then I put a disposable rubber glove on the top and store it. I live very close to the Atlantic (like sea mist in the morning), and this method has prevented rust on tools and stuff in the garage for about 15 years now.
