Let's not give pigs a bad name. I grew up around my grandfather raising a few hogs, and I do testify for the record that they are considerably smarter than: A. many of the gun "experts" B. many of the most rabidly anti-gun folks I've met and C. every member of PETA.

The fiction comes from distorted fact. I'm not sure about these days, but back in the 80s, a lot of the armor piercing ammo was coated in Teflon to keep the stuff from eating the riflings out of barrels. Somehow that came to mean that all Teflon coated projectiles were AP, which was simply false.

Cops should have campaigned to keep the Black Talons around, they are among the most susceptible to stoppage by body armor. If I were a cop in light body armor and someone were shooting at me, I'd be praying they were using something like Black Talons, Glaser Safety Slugs, or Winchester Silvertips. My chances of surviving would increase exponentially.

Not true. There is/was such a thing as AP handgun bullets (never made available to civilians) just like there are AP rifle rounds, but the steel projectile is inside a copper jacket. Teflon coated bullets had no relationship to armor piercing bullets. It was just one of those urban myths that got repeated so often it became accepted as truth.

Again this myth has an identifiable source. The Hornady reloading video from the late 60s has Joyce Hornady himself explaining ballistics and the basic happenings inside a chamber as a gun fires. In that video, he makes the passing remark "The .357 Magnum, which has been responsible for the decommissioning of several engine blocks."

I believe he meant that the .357, unlike the earlier .38 special, had enough velocity to get a slug through a steel fender and into the engine compartment, where it would likely do some damage, possibly disabling the engine.

I know that some, if not most, of the AP is copper jacketed, but I could swear I read in a reliable source somewhere that some of the AP had the Teflon coating to protect barrels. But, it's been a long time and I'm not certain.

I once had a guy tell me he was going to sell his 30.06 and get a .270 because it shot the same weight bullets faster and flatter at 300 yards. Velocity aside, I asked him if he could tell 1 1/2" difference at 300 yds. He simply never got it. He is also the guy who shot with iron sights because with his glasses, he didn't need a scope for anything less than 500 yds. There's one born every minute.

just aboult smaked a buddy of mine because of his insistant idiocy.

on the topic of handguns and deer hunting one day he told me how he got a deer with his S&W m&p40. (i carry a glock 22 as a finisher but never found a situation where it would out perform my slug gun)

buddy: "yeah she (the doe) was running at about 50 yards and i emptied my shot gun at her so i drew my forty and started poppin rounds and one of them nailed it right in the ass! she didnt go 30 yards after that so i must have totaly blown out an artery or someting."

by now im pretty glad that im wearin boots because its gettin deep in a hurry!

me: im just carrying my .40 too but once i can afford it i plan on getting a 6" GP100 in .357 mag"

buddy: "a .357 for deer?"

me: "yeah. i already have an sp101 so i would have fewer calibers to stock ammo for. plus for something the size of a deer at thick brush ranges it more than enough."

buddy: (suddenly becomes almost disgusted) "why would you want a .357?!? that wont even kill a deer! they just suck for anything but targets!"

me: "dont tell that to the thousands of deer that have have died over the years to fatal .357 wounds."

buddy: "no really, i know this guy that shot a deer at like, 25 yards and didnt even die!"

at this point im so impressed at his stupidity and just all around irritated that i decided there was no point to it anymore and i just walked away.


ps: this same guy's deer load of choice is a varmit load in a .243 and he sees no ethical concerns with his choice and sees no reason why it wouldnt perform flawlessly. suffice to say he is not, nor will he ever be a member of my hunting party. we like to include people who have both brains and morals.

Oddly enough, there are several semi-automatic pistols in .38 special, notably the S&W Model 52.

Probably not the pistol they were using, as it's a rather obscure target gun, but it's not unheard of.

Actually I was aware of that, IIRC Colt also made a Gold Cup in .38 Special, and another 1911 type was made by a fellow named Coonan. There are even more in .357 Magnum. But, as you said, these are all very obscure, and unlikely to be the gun depicted. Actually it looked very much like a Sig, but no markings, and no decocker or slide stop on what the photo shows to be the left side. Though it is possible that the photo actually showed the right side, and was flipped before publishing.

When I lived in Cali for a brief period, I got into a conversation with a lady at a coffee chop about hunting coyotes to keep them from killing newborn calves (I grew up on a ranch). She informed me in a disgusted voice that the Univesity of Conneticut had done studies that proved that coyotes did not kill cattle or any other livestock.

During that same time period I heard a DJ at a popular radio station say that there was no reason in the world to hunt for food because the supermarkets were filled with packaged meat.

Scoped rifle = "sniper rifle"

Sales guy at a gun store that I visit maybe once a year:

The dumbest thing I ever heard about guns was that a 30-30 wasn't a good deer cartridge in wooded areas. Ok, I'll buy that it's not a good cartridge in wide open farm or range areas where you might have a 300 yard shot, but wooded terrain. I didn't say anything but I was rolling my eyes inside. I mean were talking about the cartridge that's taken more white tail than 3006, 270 and 308 combined.

I was told by an officer at a gun store that I used to visit that the AR-Pistol I was going to build," that thing is only good for drive by shootings" !! I respectfully disagreed, but inside just ...
Guess he never heard of soft point ammo, and he XM177 wih a 10" barrel that saw combat, that some SWAT entry teams use them, but whatever.

A range officer at the gun range also called the pistol illegal as I was headin out the door after shooting all day saying,"You know hat thing is illegal right? It has to have a 16" barrel on it.":banghead: This is AFTER he checked me in, and let me shoot it all day! Again I thought he would have known better, but I simply told him, "It is legally a pistol, and there is no current limit on how long, or short a barrel a pistol must have". He gave me a funny look, and that was that. I still bring the 25-26" Pistol to that range!!

If I had one in .30 caliber, I'd use the thing to requalify for my CHL, just to make a point
