I recently purchased a M1A SOCOM 16. I purchased some AMMO from a guy I know at work. I went out and shot about 30 rounds of ammo through it 10 days ago. I go back to work and tell this guy that I fired some of his ammo and he then proceeds to tell me its corrosive.

Should I be worried? The gun is clean now but it sat for 10 day in my gun safe with the salts on it. In hind site I should have asked him. If there is any redeeming thing about this story its that I got 500 rounds for $80.

Hmmm. I'd go back and pour hot water down the bore and gas tube (some say soapy water and others say windex with ammonia) just to be certain. Then clean as normal again.

Great price on the ammo but he should've told you it was corrosive to begin with.

Congrats on your Socom purchase, I'm looking forward to one someday myself.

Yeah, you got 500 hundred rounds of dirty cheap ammo that might screw up your gun. But the price was good.

Corrosive ammo won't "screw up your gun" if proper cleaning is done. I've shot hundreds of rounds of corrosive ammo through my SKS, and know people who have put thousands of rounds of corrosive ammo through their AKs and SKS's, Mosins, Tokarevs, and yeah, even AR's. Considering I, and most people I know, clean their guns after shootings anyway, corrosive ammo is just fine by me.....especially at that kind of price

Corrosive primed ammo is no big deal so long as the gun is properly cleaned soon after firing. Neglect the gun and you will get a rusted bore. I fire thousands of rounds of corrosive primed ammo every year. I've never had a gun rust from using ammo with corrosive primers.

Cleaning a gun that has fired corrosive primed ammo is not big deal: Hoppe's #9 does a real good job.

I like Hoppe's #9 to get the initial grunge out to make it easier to run the patches through. Hoppe's #9 is great, and even works on corrosive ammo.

....yeah but it's a SOCOM!

I've shot a lot of corrosive ammo over the last 40 years with no problems. Somebody told me to use Windex first then clean as usual. Works for me. I treat all unkown ammo as corrosive.

Yeah I was pissed off when he hit me with that one. He absolutely should have told me, and I probably should have been smart enough to ask. The head stamp say .308W with o o and 82 down below.

Nobody has offered me an opinion if I should expect damage or not after a 10 day sit.

For the record the rifle looks fine shiney clean bore ect. no noticeable damage.......yet.

The speed of rusting depends on how high the relative humidity is. In NM I shot corrosive all the time and never used any special cleaning methods (out of ignorance) but never had any problems. Now that I live in OR I've seen rust spots within 45 of shooting, although it was raining at the time.

Corrosive primer residue can still cause rusting under a coating of gun oil, if the humidity goes up. You want to get the salts that cause the rusting off anyplace that they touch steel. I use soapy water after shooting corrosive and have several thousand rounds thru my rifles with no problems. BSW

Brian,
Thanks for the reply. I will say that the rifle was stored in a safe that has a Browning brand desiccate package for gun safes prior to getting it out for cleaning. So maybe I bought myself a little time because of that. I poured near boiling water down the barrel, gas tube parts and bolt then let them soak for about an hour then did a normal cleaning. I think everything will be alright.

Yep, it won't screw up your gun unless you have to wait to clean, etc. And I understand using cheap dirty ammo through a SKS. But personally, I'd try and use non-corrosive through a more expensive gun like a Socom. To each his own.....

If your barrel and action are OK, then no worries. Clean the hell out of it. Oil after. Everything's good.

Well so far after a long soak in my steaming hot bathtub, a windex swabbing and a through cleaning there is no sign of damage. I will leave the rifle disassembled and monitor it for a couple of weeks. Everything is clean and shiny in the barrel, breech and action.

99% of Montana is dry enough that it would take a long time or some major rain storms to raise the humidity enough to cause any real damage to your gun. Before I knew what corrosive ammo was I shot it all day through my 8mms here in Pocatello Idaho and I would leave the gun for weeks before cleaning it. The only time I ever found rust on it was when I left it in my truck after a rain storm that caused condensation on the inside of the windshield.

I live over here in Missoula just over the hill and a little north of Pokey. We are probably the only Montana town with somewhat high humidity. It would be interesting to see how it faired outside for a while in the weather.

I've shot lots of corrosive ammo with no problems but was anal about proper cleaning.
Proper cleaning preferably to include the use of either copious amounts of hot soapy water followed hot water rinse or thorough use of the old white colored GI bore cleaner.
I've seen the results of neglect or improper cleaning of using corrosive ammo and it ain't pretty.

The buy-product of using corrosive ammo is salt. That's it. You get "salt" in your gun. For some reason, people make it sound like if you so much as look at corrosive ammo, sulfuric acid will magically attack your gun. Think of it this way:

How comfortable are you leaving some salt-buildup in your gun? I'd say two days max, before I'd start worrying about rust.

You let it sit for 10 days without cleaning ? Why do you hate your guns so much ?

I think it has been 2 years since I really cleaned my AR in .223. All I have done for it is put some oil in the action and pull a bore snake through the barrel to make sure it still works. It loves being dirty. I also own a truck that gets scratches and dings on it when I (heaven forbid) drive it off road. It may sound cruel to the poor creatures but they like it enough to keep getting the job done.
