Is the Taurus 709 pistol any good. I like the size, but I have not heard how they are as far as reliability and accuracy. Experience welcomed. Thanks.

Mine has been excellent for reliability and function(~400-500 rounds though at this point). One thing that has just come up and I have to investigate futher is, the rear sight seems to have gone out of adjustment without me toughing it(it is fully adjustable). I had it spot on POA at 25', I haven't shot it in awhile(but it is my EDC). I used it at a plate match Sunday, the targets were set a 33' and I couldn't hit a thing. Later I went to the range and set paper at 25' and found it shooting 4-6" low  I put elevation in and POA came back up.....I have to look into this when I have time.

Mine is an all around good gun. It shoots comfortably for a thin pistol and it is very accurate and reliable. The only issue I had was when I first got it the rear sights were crooked (on dot higher than the other). I had to bring it back to the gun store to get it straightened out. He said it just had a plastic burr stuck in it. I hate adjustable sights on something that is meant primarily as a defensive weapon. Those sights are also pretty cheaply made too. It is the only thing about the gun I don't like, and hopefully something I can change soon. The trigger pull is great by the way, one of my favorites.

Soon I'll be getting a Kahr cw9 to complement it (another thin IWB gun that I can just about get 3 fingers on).

Taurus 709 Reliability

I've had mine for 6 months or so...shot 500+ rounds through it...no jams, feed issues, or anything else, so I think it's reliable. I hve also had an issue with the rear sites....seems ok now. All in all, from what I've read on other similar handguns, it compares favorably.

Over 1200 rounds through mine of all types of FMJ and JHP with no significant issues. It is my every day carry and I trust it as much as I do my others. It MUST be kept squeaky clean and reasonably lubed.

It MUST be kept squeaky clean and reasonably lubed.

I think this is one of the main reasons people have a problem with it. A lot of them don't take the time to properly clean and lube it before they first shoot it. I spent about an hour on mine the first day trying to get that creamy goop out. The metal on this gun soaks up lube like a thirsty stone! I re-lube it with rem oil about once every 2 weeks.

My Taurus 709 worked with 100% reliability for the first 175+ rounds. However, it was letting the cases bulge so I sent it in for repair.

Bulged cases can be the gun's fault?
Shooting new factory standard pressure ammunition the case would have a bulge on one side. Apparently, the chamber of the pistol wasn't correctly supported in that area. That would be the chambers fault and since the chamber of the barrel is a component of the pistol, then by default it's the pistols fault.

I love mine. Best of the slim 9mm's out there, with the possible exception of the PPS. Points naturally, GREAT TRIGGER (probably the best trigger on any striker fired gun out there), takes down like a glock, mine has functioned flawlessly since day 1, handles recoil like a full size.

In short, the 709 is leaps and bounds better than the others in terms of its trigger and how it handle recoil. I used to own a PF-9. +p in the 709 kicks less than standard pressure in the PF-9 did, as an example.

Reliability? Build quality? Well, it's a taurus. Make sure you get a good one. Get a gun shop that will let you field strip a few of them and pick the best looking one inside before you buy. Check the extractor and barrel lugs.
