On RRA website they offer Ace Skeleton style stocks. I'm really interested in getting this style of stock for my LAR-8, but RRA says that these Ace stocks can't be use with the .308s.
Does anyone have any idea why? I was under the impression that most .223 stocks could be put on a .308 AR style rifle? Was I sorely misinformed or is this just an exception?

Secondly, since the Ace stock is unavailable to me, is anyone aware if a comparable product?

Point me in the right direction.
Thanks for the help.

I'll pass along some possibly bad information: I remember reading (and I think it was on this website) that the additional recoil of the .308 damaged the adjusting stud on a guy's stock.

the ace skeleton stocks aren't nearly as sturdy as they appear due to the crappy locking mechanism which i have seen collapse under heavy recoil. however, 308 ain't heavy recoil in an AR and i doubt that is the problem.

other possible explanations are that the charging handle comes back farther and interferes with something? i don't think there's anything solid in the way but maybe that spongy stuff they wrap around the buffer tube is in the way? i don't know

a third possible explanation is that there's some pin/spring that is captured by regular stocks that the skeletal profile of the ace stock won't capture. on AR15s, the stock captures the rear takedown pin. on SR25s, that pin/spring is vertical and captured by the grip instead. but i don't know on the LAR8.

the LMT SOPMOD and anything by magpul are excellent (far superior) alternatives. btw, the skeletal stock is actually a bit heavier than it looks

I assume you are referring to the M4 SOCOM stock, since the regular ARFX stock is fixed? If o, that's a bummer. I always liked the aesthetics and functionality of that model.

I don't think the charging handle would present any sort of problem, but the length of the carrier itself might present an issue. I'm not sure though, as I don't own an AR10 pattern rifle to compare. The spongy stuff just slides over the buffer tube and would only present a problem if it was so tight it compressed the inner diameter of the tube. :what:

LMT and Magpul make some great stocks, but in my experience ACE makes great stocks as well. I've installed an ARFX on someone else's rifle and they have had no issues to date that I know of. I also have one of their skeleton folders on my AK and IMO it is hands-down the best aftermarket AK stock available.

I would suggest the OP contact RRA for an explanation. If they say that it can't be used, surely they can provide a quick answer as to why? I would suggest picking up the phone to nail this one down. Emails like this probably won't get any air time. :scrutiny:

yeah, i should have been more specific. i was talking about their m4 socom. would have to be some pretty interesting recoil to cause a fixed stock to collapse :)

This Ace skeleton stock has been on my AR-10 for quite a few years now with no issues and I love it.

The rifle is a Bushmaster BAR-10 which is pretty much the same as your rifle so it will accept the ACE stock.

I just changed the scope out on it the other day; now it is sporting a Burris Eliminator laser scope which is really cool.

The only warnings I recall were the SOCOM style stock not the skeleton stock. The design of the skeleton stock is such that you should have no structural problem handling a 308. The SOCOM stock has an unsupported buttplate that creates a torque on the stock under recoil. The Ace skeleton stock is fully supported and strong. I have had no issues with the folding mechanism on my semi auto 308's either and consider the stock very solid.

I contacted RRA and they actually said it would work with the proper buffer spring and weight. So I'll probably be getting one.

Hey thanks for all the input.

if i got this stock would my spring need to be a different length than it is now? i have a 6 position adjustable stock now.
