My friend is in dire need of money and wants to sell this 1964 4in python for 300 dollars. It has rosewood grips with a inlaid ivory rattlesnake. most of bluing is gone but it is very smooth and locks up tight. Thanks for the help.

Is this a joke? If he put it on gunbroker, even in its current condition it would get twice that price.

YES it's worth it!!!!!

yes yes yes colt only charges about $300 to redo a gun.A nice python brings $1000 easiy! If not I will buy it!!

Even in that condition if I see a Python for sale for $300 I assume its stolen (and I would argue that whoever buys it for $300 has just stolen it :p ).

In all seriousness if he's offering to sell it to you for $300, run (don't walk) to the nearest ATM and get the cash.

If you're just trying to figure out what his asking price should be in selling it to someone else, I'd stay put it on Gunbroker with several photos and start the bidding at $600.

Man, if he is a good friend I would give him at least another $400. They easily fetch $1000 online at Gunbroker.

If he is just one of those acquaintances that we all use the loose word "friend" to describe, then take it for $300 and run.

Personally I would give him at least $350 for it. Send it back to Colt for a refinish, then find the proper grips. The proper grips (stocks) should be what's called the second generation grips (half moon checkering). They can be found on Ebay from time to time. You may want to check the Colt Forum as well. There are a lot of good folks there and someone may have a set they are willing to get rid of.

I just checked about sending my Python in, and with return shipping, their Royal Blue finish will cost you $330.00, so you could have a nice Python for $630.00.

DO IT!!! :D

may not have been stolen at the beginning of the day, but it sure as hell was by the end of it....:neener:

sending it to Colt next week. I am new to this forum and i am pleased with all the help. will show pics when i get it back. He also has a two inch lawman 357. shiny nickel very nice. 575.00

Well, he just did!

Mid 60s blued Python are among the most desireable. Even in this stinky economy, they still seem to be fetching $1300 - $1500 (with the original finish and stocks). Assuming a refinished gun won't be quite as valuable as an original finish (say, $1000 conservatively) and it costs $330 to have it refinished, I'd say that gun is likely worth $600-$700 as it sits. Maybe as low as $500 considering it doesn't have the original stocks.

Either way, it was a killer deal, way to go!

I myself recently came on a trashed 6" blued S&W Model 29-2 for $300, IIRC. However in that case, after figuring all the work it would need (a refinish, new wood stocks, possible re-timing, excessive endshake, etc, it would have merely been a break even proposition over a gun in already fine shape, so I passed.

Please post pics once the gun has been restored to its original glory.

It's pretty rough except for the aftermarket grips but $300 was OK.

I LOVE rough looking guns... Had a 686 go through a friend's shop last year that had been left in police evidence locker (looked like it had been buried in a lake) for a bit too long and looked terrible... we blasted it and parkerized it and it was AWESOME... the parkerizing took to the pitting in a really cool way that made it look just rugged as hell.. Unfortunately another friend of the shop called dibbs before I could...

Man I liked that gun!!

If he's a good friend, lend him the $300 and keep the Python as collateral. Otherwise you are taking advantage of him and it may harm your friendship.

If he's an acquaintance, I would suspect it as stolen.

As others mentioned a Phyton is worth 3 or 4 times that; even one in worn condition would be twice what he's asking.
