How do you carry your magazine?

I did the tool pouch for a while, it works best with a nice stiff one like Gerber packs in along with knives / multitools.

In the end, I determined that I don't like it for the same reason I don't carry my phone or pocketknife OWB ... I just dislike crap hanging off of me and prefer to have things in a pocket (none left!) or IWB.

Weak side (left for me), just behind my hip, ammo pointing to the rear (which means when I pull a mag, its oriented right to be inserted in the pistol)...my mag carriers are 2 Buck knife cases, they are a perfect fit for 7 round mags (Officers framed 1911)

I use cell phone holders with clips on them and then modify it to fit the magazine i will be carrying, I always make it ride low so the clip is at the very top and the mag base flush with it so its easily removed but never exposed.
Then i carry it in my weak side rear pocket, Or in the cooler months with i can wear jackets it gets clipped into the breast pocket.
In the breast pockets ill cut a plastic filler piece that is the same size as the pocket so the weight of the mag doesn't make it sag oddly or flop around.

Ive found horizontal knife pouches will hold a 1911 mag comfortably on the weak side of my belt well also. Problem is i also carry a knife so 2 knife pouches like that don't fit well and look odd.

I bought a velcro pouch that looks just like a folding knife sheath. $4. Clips on my belt weak side. Loose shirt covers it great. I was using one of the stiffer mag holders, but they didn't bend with me when I would set down. They would dig into my side. Picked this thing up and it works wonders. Praticed with it for the past 3 weeks. It is a little slower, but more concealed.

I'm surprised not to have seen this answer yet, but I just carry my spare mag toward the outside of my weak side pocket next to my wallet to keep it vertical. Has always worked for me.

In my book bag, duh.

What?

Oh, those. If I'm actually carrying a semi, then the mag is simply in my pocket.

Re: tool pouch. The base of the mag is going to show. So much for the concealed part...

My CZ doesn't get one, but I will change that once I'm sure I trust my newest mag. It will go weak side, rounds facing back--natural position to pull and slap it in.

Not worried about needing 14 more rounds, but would make clearing a jam easier.

My .38 gets a speedloader in the left pocket, now changed to a speed strip. So much more comfortable.

Re: tool pouch. The base of the mag is going to show. So much for the concealed part...

Unless my shirt or jacket pulls up, no one will even see the pouch. Even if they see the pouch, they'd have to be down at waist level and about 12" away to notice that it was a magazine and not a multi-tool in there.

Very few people have their head down by my waist and 12" away.

I will second what The Lone Harangeur has previously posted:

I carry a spare mag on my weak side with the bullets facing forward.

When you need a spare mag, chances are you need it NOW.

Do you really feel like tinkering around? How about taking a few milliseconds to ignore the guy shooting at you for a bit while you determine which way it should be inserted?

I know! How about reaching across your body and feeling around for your spare mag? (You do have your gun in your strong hand, right?) How's that magazine next to your holster supposed to make it into the magazine well? Jump by itself? I'm guessing you're gonna have to do the ol' "reach-around". How convenient.

All these things seem kind of anal retentive NOW. Having that needed spare mag in a place where it is easily reached and then inserted into the weapon without taking your eyes off the threat might come in handy LATER, though.

I know, for me, feeling the nose of the top bullet in a fully loaded magazine slide behind the front strap of my pistol grip will be pretty comforting if I should ever need it.

Seriously, though, I don't carry a spare mag. When I first started carrying, though, I just had the cheap Uncle Mike's with the spare mag pouch in front of the gun. And then someone was kind enough to correct me that the spare mag goes on the weak side, doh!

I used to not carry a spare mag...but I figured the spare mag would help even out the weight of the gun some what. I ended up buying a leather mag pouch from Brazil. I took one fast step and the snap holding in on my belt came undone. To remedy this I bent the snap a little so now its hard to snap closed or to open.

I'm sure I'll replace it soon though. Lesson learned: don't get a snap closure mag pouch.

usually i carry one extra 1911 mag in a gerber pouch it fits perfectly & is secured with velcro on my week side hip. i too believe it helps balance out the weight. i also have a nite ize pock-its pouch it holds two 1911 mags perectly and stacked. the one in the back is slightly higher then the one in the front. mine work great becuse i didn't have to modify either one & both have velcro closures. if someone sees one they would just think it was a leatherman type tool or folding knife.

Like NavyLt, I don't carry a spare magazine. I know most CCer's disagree with me, but I'm a pretty good shot and practice calm restraint. I don't figure on a prolonged firefight. If that happens, I'll get my share of the BG's before my demise.

One full clip in sidearm, and also in black nylon pouch (previously held flashlight) on belt, holds one clip each for .45 and .380, one concealed, and one more concealed. Figure that's enough for the two.

Two spare mags in Don Hume double mag holder with tension screw, on weak side, forward of hip, bullets facing forward. Agree with Wishin, don't expect to get in a prolonged fire fight BUT ifn I get in any kinda shootin situation I like being able to top of my gun when I can and havin a spare in case of a fumble...

I'm trying to make sense of the bullet forward idea....if I do that when I pull a mag, its turned the wrong way to go into the pistol.

My mags (Tripp) have a base pad that overhangs a bit on the front side, I index from that...using it to pull the mag out of the carrier.

It works for me, its fast, and I'm used to it...I'm no Todd Jarrett, but I can reload pretty fast.

I don't figure on a prolonged firefight.

Neither do I. The reason I carry a spare magazine is that the majority of firearm malfunctions are magazine related, carrying a spare mag is a small price to pay to stack the odds in my favor. (Not talking about the odds of needing the gun in the first place.)

I'm trying to make sense of the bullet forward idea....

If you carry bullet forward you place your index finger down along the front of the magazine. Your thumb grasps the magazine in between your body and the magazine itself while your other fingers are obviously on the other side. Your index finger can then be used to help guide the magazine in to the mag well.

I'm actually still trying to picture how bullet rearward would work...

Thanks lions for explaining that...I get it now.

I'm actually still trying to picture how bullet rearward would work..

I use the protruding base pad to pull the mags (notice my mag carriers above), my middle finger is what gets under the base pad and pulls them up out of the carrier....when the mag is clear of the carrier, the index finger is then pointed towards the bullet in the top round (its reflex, no thought required... no harder than the other way I imagine...just what you get used to).

It works for me anyway...with my mag carriers. If the bullets are forward there is nothing good to get a grip on to pull the mag out of them. My thumb can pull them out, but I don't have very good control of the mag that way (based on a few trial runs I just did)

That's where I carry my 7-round Kahr mag. Anything more than 7-round capacity wouldn't fit.

Good one mudinyeri ;)
I can carry a 9 round XD40 SC mag in the same Leatherman pouch that carries my Kahr single-stack mags. Not sure if the pouch has a model number or not but it has fabric running verticaly in the center of it allowing it to expand to fit a larger tool (or magazine).
