I am looking for a good quality accurate steel handgun in .40. I love the looks of the CZ 75b and love the way it fits my hand, but am hearing of lot's of reliability issues in .40. I have also heard that CZ's customer service is poor.

Are there any other good alternatives out there, or is the CZ just getting a bad rap on the Internet?

You could always go the 1911 style route, and used 3rd Gen S&Ws are a great option as well.

My top too picks would be the Sig 226ST or the S&W 4006. Most of the guns that are designed from the ground up around the .40 don't come with steel frames...umless you can find a Sig 229ST

I had a CZ75 in 40 that was excellent.

The only problem that I had was the grip wasnt for me.
(It was too little)

I chose a Sig226 in 40

Dont give up on the CZ. They are fantastic guns. All steel accuracy.

If I remember correctly, I think that there were a few early versions
of the 40's from CZ75B that had FTEs.

I think that problem has been resolved by CZ.

I also think that some of the folks complaining may also have been "limp-wristing" as well, which I think that the CZ75 is prone to. The CZ75B may also be a little finnicky with different types of ammo as well.

I had another caliber CZ that I had for 20 years and it was awesome.

One thing bad about web forums is the few bad guns get the press, again, and again, and again, and again.

The fact is........ even my beloved Sig Sauer gets occasional complaints for something.

Most of the CZ issues I have heard about were with the compact models, not the full sized 75. I've never heard those issues with the Witness, which is a copy of the 75.
The Hi Power, S&W, or Sig, are the best guns out there.

BTW, I was surprised to hear about a negative report on CZ customer service. I have always heard good things in the past.

M&PVolk,

There are always some issues with some guns in various calibers. I have heard of some CZ's, most notably the early compact RAMI in .40 having some feeding issues. Have not heard this about the full size versions.

In fact of my handfull of 100%'ers, 2 of these slots are occupied by CZ's. My CZ-75B/.40 will eat ANYTHING, TC, HP, SWC, and any weight, from 155 all the way through 220 grain bullets. It's just amazing.

My CZ-40B (discontinued) is the same as my 75 and has never even hinted at feed or extraction problem.

Stick with the factory or Mec-gar mags and you should have no problems.

I've enjoyed my Daewoo DH40. A very well made, accurate and reliable, 11+1 round mid sized duty pistol. The tri-action trigger makes this pistol a bit unique.

Kahr makes a very slim, single stack, all stainless steel .40 in two models, the K40 and T40.

The Stoegar Cougar 8040 is a nice, inexpensive .40 S&W handgun. It's a Beretta design -- in fact it is made in Turkey with Beretta manufacturing equipment.

FWIW

I have not shot the Kahr but I have held it and pulled the trigger. I had no idea how good the trigger was on those things. It was beautiful as well, just like the 9mm pictured above. A little heavy but what do you expect from a gun that is made of wood and steel. I would give it a try.:)

This is probably not that helpful as I have only shot one "steel" gun, but the SIG P226 is a damn fine unit.
It's built like a tank, but that fact makes the .40's recoil very tame.
I really like the S/A pull, but I feel the D/A pull could definitely use some improvement.

I've enjoyed my Daewoo DH40.

My gunsmith had one of those, the one he had had an aluminum frame, I assumed they all did.

The only .40 I own is this;

The Star "Starfire" is available used, a very compact but heavy gun, mine has been flawless, and from a rest the accuracy is amazing. Downside? Parts are hard to find and will be getting harder to find, however, these guns are built very solid. Once you own a few Star's you become a fan. :)

EAA Witness Match .40..... what an amazing firearm!... accurate as can be.

Next would be the CZ75 .40 beyond that, i don't have a steel .40 that jumps out at me. Beretta would be next i guess...

...

You could look for a nice used (not made by Beretta anymore) one of their 96 series Centurions or Brigadiers. Also their *Cougar 8040 series

Nice looking guns..

*Can't think of the name right now but Beretta sold all the manufacturing equipment of the Cougar series 8045, 8040, to a company, IIRC, in Brazil and from all I have heard, they are nicely made, for the most part NIB at around 500 bucks.

*Added thanks to post #28 by TB: * Stoeger/Beretta Cougar 8040. $369 NIB

All metal guns, either used or new

S&W 4006: tough as nails, great customer service and support, very reasonably priced in the used market.

Not 100% steel, but a Sig P229 is a great steel/aluminum gun. I recently bought a CPO (certified pre-owned) model and paid $530 shipped. The gun's finish is flawless as well as its function. No malfunctions and a great shooter!
