I don't have a lot of cash, but want a reliable, accurate pistol that's easy to carry and relatively inexpensive to feed. I have my eyes on a CZ-82 but am warry. As I've never looked for 9x18 ammo, I have no idea how easy it is to get my hands on, nor how expensive it is compared to more common ammo (.38, .40, .45, etc.)

So what do you think? Is the CZ-82 a good choice? I'd love to hear both pros and cons of the CZ-82 and the 9x18 ammo.

Thanks ... I love this place.

The CZ-82 is an excellent pistol. The 9MM Makarov caliber (9x18) is slightly more powerful than .380 and is readily available and inexpensive from on line sources. Its a little large and heavy for the caliber but with a decent holster is easily concealed and carried. I like the Makarov pistol a little better for this caliber as its slimmer but it also carries less rounds than the CZ.

I'd also look at the German police trade in Sig P6's (P225) in 9MM that are currently available. They're around $350 I believe.

Well...I dont know what bad you could have heard about the CZ82..because frankly there isnt much to be bad about them  They are a very very fine shooters......triggers are one of if not THE best DA trigger out there. The only bummer about the guns is they are big for what they are.

Makarov ammo is easy to find...Cabellas and other bigger chains have it as well as online ammo suppliers.

Id agree the PM, or Pistol Makarov is slimmer than the 82 but given the better trigger that MOST 82's have and increased ammo capacity..its a toss up for which is a better carry.

Great gun........get one if you can.

Shoot well and god bless

And if you do get one, Eric here can make you a great pancake holster for it! :)

All of the CZ82s are used and you have no way of knowing exactly how used a particular pistol is, so just be wary and function test first. Other boards do in fact have horror stories regarding the CZ82.

A good one has a very nice trigger, is accurate, mags are easy to find, sights are simi poor but usable, the pistol is decocked the old fashioned way (thumb on the hammer, trigger pulled), wood grips break often, some parts are no longer available, prices are low at around $200 on the internet.

The ammo is easy to find and fairly cheap. I pay around $8 a box for non-Russian ammo. Russian ammo is even cheaper. Thirteen rounds of 9mm Mak should defend you from most any threat.

Wow...must be some old beat up POS 82's that people were just trying to unload. All that Ive shot and owned were very nice.........

Any and all parts for the 82 are identical to the CZ83 and CZUSA should have any and all of the parts your likely to need.....

Yep..they take CZ83 leather......Shoot well and god bless

That is not an accurate statement. The 83 and 82 do in fact have some parts not in common. Pray you do not loose your 82 slide stop spring, a fairly common occurance.

Mendel5 : And what, praytell, is the lanyard for?

We in the military (and many outdoorsmen) use a lanyard to secure the weapon to our body to prevent accidental loss. Like dropping your 44 in the muskeg, overboard or leaving your M9 in the porta-****ter (that one went over well).

I agree with the comments on reliability. I have two wonderful working CZ82. One looks rough and shoots great, and the other looks good and shoots great. I have only had two jams in 2k rounds. Both were with S & B. Never a hiccup from Wolf or winchester. The ones I have seem to have been carried often, fired seldom.

go for it.

Well...that would make sense...making the transition from the military version to the civilian version they may have made some changes...

I still havent heard of "glaring problems with the CZ82"....not like other guns.

shoot well and god bless

I want a vz82 myself. CZ-82 is what everybody calls it, but the Czech military never called it that. :)

I was concerned about finding ammo for it and thought about getting the civilian version (CZ-83) instead of a vz82, but then I found out that the 9x18mm ammo is not rare or expensive, so at $200, the vz82 is an awesome buy. Usually they come with the military leather holster, but if you want a more practical civilian carry holster, any holster that works for a CZ-83 should work for a vz82.

As mentioned above, many but not all internal parts are interchangeable between a vz82 and a CZ-83 of the same caliber.

Mendel5,

Should you decide to purchase a CZ82, or 83, you should be aware that the 9mm Mak. and .380 magazines are identical and work in both models (82 & 83).

2 cents:
I think there may be a better choice for 8X18. 2 days ago, I went to the range with my friend and his CZ82. I had my recently bought Makarov IJ70-18A. The CZ, even though we were using the same ammo, seemed to recoil much more than the Mak, even though they felt like they weighed about the same. No matter how I tried, the CZ really banged my trigger finger, right on the part where they take fingerprints. It's still tender today. After that side-by-side, I prefer the Mak. It holds less rounds but it's much nicer to shoot. It's really flat, too, so it's much more concealable. Here's one for $200:

It's a C&R gun, too.

woad_yurt, perhaps we're not discussing the same weapon. The thread title could be misleading. You're talking about the Makarov pistol used by the Soviet Union and other communist countries. The Czechs have a history of choosing, for one reason or another, to build their own weapons chambered for the same cartridge as Soviet weapons of the same era instead of simply using the Soviet designed weapons.

Soviets and others used the TT33, Czechs used the vz52/CZ-52. Soviets and others used the Makarov, Czechs used the vz82/CZ-82.

The Czech vz82/CZ-82 is, in fact, C&R eligible, and it is not the same weapon as the Soviet and East German Makarovs.

The only bummer about the guns is they are big for what they are.

Some of my favorite and sweetest shooting guns match this description. The current craze seems to be trying to cram the most powerful caliber into the smallest possible package; ".50 BMG Ultra-Micro-Carry!" I think there is something to be said for a reasonable fit between the size of the gun and the power of the cartridge.

I agree, and that's why I like pistols such as the Makarov and Beretta 84/85 series as they are big enough to shoot a 9MM Mak or .380 accurately and comfortably.
