check out the recent edition of petersens mag re surplus firearms. they compare a mak to the tok 7.62x23. the tok strikes me as not so well made as the cz mak and older. but a very hot cartridge and offered for sale as surplusat .10/rd. that's pretty cheap for everyday shooting. i have a cz 82 and it is robust, being a military pistol. and i think very well made. i bought from AIM and it arrived in very nice condition; a few chips in the grip stock, but that's it. ammo is not expensive and not cheap. there are better rounds out there, but for the money i think this little pistol is a real winner. and in addition to build quality, it has great ergonomic appeal.

The Makarov is one of the few true combat pistols in the world. If you doubt its capabilities as a combat gun than you need to do a little reaserch to see that it is still used by many countries as a sidearm. The countries that use it trust its reliability, acceptable accuracy, and low recoil for the same reason that we trust the M9. It works.
As for the lainyard, while it does keep you from loosing your gun the purpose of it is to keep someone from gaining control of your sidearm and using it on you.
