I own and now have used both guns,. The bigest problem with the stevens is the stock. I really could not stand the hollow space. When I removed the pad there was a big hollow stock with a little piece of foam stuck in it. I filled it up with play dough in a plastic bag. It feels much better now. The mossy stock and gun handle better to me. I wish it didn't have the molded in sling swivels but I noticed a Remington that has that too. What gives here? I don't know why but the 270 stevens I bought for my son and the mossy 270 seem to be easier to handle the recoil from than the stevens 7-08. Go figure...anyone have any reason why I would think this? I always heard the 7-08 was a pussy cat for recoil.

The 7mm-08Rem. is a pussycat, it probably just comes down to individual fit, and the Stevens buttpad is horrible. It might help to replace that booger. I have a .30-06Spd. (Brownchester M-1895) that has more felt recoil more than a .375H&H (Whitworth Express Mauser)...the big thumper just fits me better (BTW, weight is pretty close, recoil pad is similar, and I load both at or near published max.).
My dad has an ATR in .30-06 and it is a very accurate gun. I think they're worth the price.
There are also thousands of dead deer as a result of the .243, so you don't have anything to worry about there.
I am very happy with my Mossberg 100 ATR long-action .30-'06. Shoots very well (Banner 4 x 12 scope), fits comfortably, and just plain looks good. I have had very good range results shooting a wide variety of bullet weight and manufacturers. Just a fun gun to shoot.
Mossy's ATR & 4x4 have a very good reputation for accuracy. Some early ones have had bolt issues, but that seems to be resolved. The cross pin has been improved. The problems the early ones had with bolt handles rotating has been addressed. If you get an early one, just have the handle TIG welded on the bottom where it's not noticeable. Local machine shop can do it for $25.
