Hey guys, Mooradian here. I picked up (well, my parents picked up) the poly AK-47 listed on Atlantic Firearms. The AK is made by Interarms from Houston, Texas. Now, I'm no gun expert, and this is the first AK I've gotten, but I've handled quite a few AK's and even more AR type rifles. Please bear with me here on this little semi-review I'm writing, since I havn't been able to find any reviews on this gun. I may be in High-School, but I know quite a bit more about firearms than your average 16 year old who claims to be a combat expert since they play Call Of Duty.

First off, I have done loads of research on AK's before buying this one... When the rifle arrived at our FFL I made sure to check for canted sights, mag wobble, etc. As soon as I got home I made sure all of my Bulgarian steel mags fit.

There was an issue with two of the mags, they simply would not lock in. I believe in is the rear tab of the mag, because all of the other mags snapped in very snug. AimSurplus said they would replace them, but just making sure there's nothing I can do real quick to solve the issue.

Now the first thing I noticed was the Arabic script on the (reciever?), just underneath the sights. Luckily my dad's friend who was in the CIA and is fluent in Arabic told me it was a MISR, and it had MAADI on it. Now I've done my research and know what a Maadi is... I heard they are quality AK's since the Egyptians used the same machinery the Ruskies did..

I dissassembled the AK for a cleaning (my first field strip, yay!) and loved how much easier it was than the pain in the ass AR. I noticed the bolt carrier was full auto, which will be useful for any... modifications... that can be done if the s*** ever hits the fan. I gave it a good cleaning and reassembled it. Oh, and I ordered a replacement recoil spring and bolt carrier w. piston, yugo spring and a romy carrier. Both fit nicely.

The next day we hit the range. We sent about 300 rounds downrange at distances of 50, 100, and 200 yards. I was surprised that the AK was getting hits at 200 yards, 9/10 of my rounds hit pretty close. Not AR accuracy, but decent. It was spot on, no canted sights, kicked way more than I expected it to but hey, it's the first time I actually shot one. No trigger slap, anything. I know that most of those problems are all internet mumbo jumbo, but I still had to make sure to rest my mind.

The poly furniture is nice, although I ordered a UTG Quad Rail handguard because I'm not a fan of the wiggle that you get with the 2 piece handguard... Plus I'm mounting a grip on it. The stock is nice.

Oh, and no failures to fire at all... Even when I sent 90 rounds down as fast as I could pull the trigger, no malfunctions, which I expected from an AK. Oh, and forgot to mention, it is completely parkerized, which is very nice! Cleaning rod fits snugly, and really the only issue we had was with the two mags.

Now for the pics.

I could only upload four... And I wasn't quite sure of what to take a picture of, so I did the best I could.

EDIT: Also forgot to mention it has a lifetime warranty!

the bolt carrier is FA because of the angular slant... other than that the gun is SA. obviously

Bolt carriers designed for full-auto usage have a catch designed to interact with the full-auto rate reducer and auto-sear. It also ensures it cannot fire unless it is fully in battery when coupled with these fire control parts. Most AK's made from surplus military parts have a full-auto bolt carrier. Only true commercial AK's like Saigas lack it. There's no legal issues involved with the bolt carrier itself. It just means the part was former military.

I understand now, thanks. So its not illegal to have, thats what i was worried about.

I've also heard FA bolt carriers are hardened to a higher... hardness. forget the term. Rockwell scale?

@Birdmang, no, you can have full auto parts as long as the gun itself isnt full auto, although an AK is so simple you can make it FA with a shoelace. Very illegal. i dont plan on doin it, not ready to go to prison, rather do my schoolwork!

and it has to say 922r compliant

I'd caution you, mooradian. While I'm sure you're a perfectly mature, responsible young man, if someone involved with your school were to find out about your hobby they can cause you all manner of grief. I've heard horror stories about them trying to force kids to be psychologically evaluated just because of their perfectly legal and supervised extracurricular activities.

Nice field report, mooradian... sounds like you got a great AK. I love mine too and it's been reliable for four years now. No canted sights or trigger slap here as well.

Mine's a WASR and I have 13 steel magazines, one didn't fit at first, too large toward the front of the mag where you rock it into place. A few minutes with a file on that magazine solved the problem. I suspect you could fix your magazines but it sounds more complicated than my issue. Besides if they're going to replace them I'd go that route instead.

I now think of mine as very soft shooting and I bet you'll get to that point quickly. You don't know what to expect at first but I'd say it has a lot less recoil than a 30-30.

@WardenWolf
Yeah, I keep it on the downlow, my dad also beats it into me never to talk about this stuff with people at my school.

The way I see it, I'm a straight A student who just tries to do his job in school, I don't think they should give a **** what I do in my free time, as long as it's not illegal. I love firearms, I know how to use firearms, and most of all I try to be as safe as possible with firearms. I'd much rather have shooting as a hobby than smoking dope in my room all day like most other kids.

Just my 2cents.

I considered filing down the back tab but decided not to... rather get a new one than screw one up and have a useless mag.

anyone know any cheap mags that will for sure fit...?
The tapco poly green mag that came with it fits perfectly, like the other bulgy ones.

Good for you. Very smart. I've got myself a nice WASR-10/63 and a converted Saiga .223. Very nice guns in their own right.
Are the WASRs really the pieces of junk people on the net claim them to be? considering getting one...

Generally, they're pretty good guns. However, inspect one in person prior to buying it. The main thing to look for is canted front sight blocks. My WASR underfolder is accurate. It has some mag wobble, but it still is 100% and very solid. If you get one, make sure it also has a threaded barrel. A lot of the newer ones are fully threaded and can accept any 14x1 LH AK barrel attachment. Once you sand the wood and such, they're quite nice guns. They're shooters, not lookers, but they're the closest things to genuine military AK's you'll find.

Well you want to inspect a WASR closely before buying but no, they're not junk. My only AKM is a WASR-10/63 I've had for four years. No complaints at all.

As far as magazines, I like the surplus comblock steel ones you can find for $10 here and there if you shop around. Some of mine are pretty beat up but all function perfectly. As far as fit, if any magazine will fit an AK they will. The down side is that they are heavy and bulky. From what I've heard I'd be wary of Tapco plastic ones.

hm, well the tapco fed and worked fine, light, and looks durable. but we'll see

Oh, by combloc I'm referring to eastern Europe, I don't have any Chinese magazines so no first hand experience though I'd expect they're all right. Mine are Romanian, East German, Hungarian, etc.

ETA: and I'm just going by what I've heard about Tapco, no first hand experience. Sounds like they do work... maybe I should try one. You can't just have 13 AK mags, it's just... unlucky! :D

Good luck with it! I remember you were asking some questions and doing your research a while ago, and I'm glad you were able to follow through.
