Best 9mm Personal Protection Rounds

This is a question that spurs heated debate!

Winchester Ranger T or Federal HST are both good choices. I prefer 124-127 grain +P loads in my Glock.

Some kind of heavy truck.

No but seriously, don't expect too much out of a pistol. I liked Federal's 147+P HST, would be my choice, or Winchester's 147 Ranger-T.

Or the 124+P HST, or pretty much any of that sweet fourth generation (current production as of a couple years ago) Ranger-T or the regular 147 HST would be the top of my list.

But any of the premium bullets from the reputable manufacturers should be a fine choice, like the Speer Gold Dot, Remington Golden Saber, any of the loads made with the Barnes XPB bullet like Cor-Bon DPX, Winchester's PDX, Hornady's XTP doesn't expand as much but it's earned itself a reputation as a very accurate bullet and it penetrates well, that's all I can think of at the moment, I'm sure there are one or two other good choices out there as well.

I like Hornady Critical Defense.

Any brand hollow point + P works just fine if you do your part. Try different brands and see what your weapon digests best and you achieve the best accuracy with.

Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot and Winchester Ranger-T are the best rounds on the market 9mm, .40 and .45. I personally carry Ranger-T in my 9mm.

On a side note, the heaviest load is generally the best load.

The best is kind of relative to what your gun likes.

As far as stopping power I think 124 grain +P is the way to go.

My current load is winchester pdx1 124 grain +P jhps.

Winchester PDX1 "Supreme" hollowpoints.
I use them for my .38Spl. CHL revolver & my .9mm SigSauer P226 for home defense.
I would also suggest the Blackhills loads in hollowpoints.
Bullet weight is a personal preference, but I tend to go with a heavier gr.

I use either +p+ HYDRO SHOK or +P HST from FEDERAL in most of my carry and home defense guns. These are top of the line ammo and I have a large supply from when my agency issued HYDRO SHOK.
These are larger guns with metal frames like the BERETTA 92, so recoil is less of a problem.

On the other hand, in smaller pistols, recoil can become a problem. I use regular velocity HYDRO SHOK or the FEDERAL 115 grain jhp load in my SPRINGFIELD ARMORY XD SubCompact.
The lesser recoil makes this gun more controlable and improves my practical accuracy.

I have personally found that the FEDERAL ammo, whether HYDRO SHOK, HST, traditional jhp or full metal jacket provides excellent accuracy in all my guns.

At this point, most of the standard jacketed hollow point loads will work fine with the +p and +P+ giving you an advantage as long as their increased recoil does not decrease your accuracy and control.

It's a sad truth, but often it boils down to what you can find. Don't get to stuck on your ammo choice because it may have to change.

I prefer ammo marketed to law enforcement. I would hope that it would be of sufficient quality if a manufacturer know that it will be loaded into a duty weapon. Law enforcement ammo is also expected to prove itself in testing before it is widely accepted.

Speer Gold Dot LEO, Winchester Ranger T, Federal HST are all widely used by LEOs.

I carry Winchester Ranger T in 127 +P+. It can be tough to find. Buy several boxes of your choice to insure against another 9mm drought like we had last year. No one likes to change carry ammo all willy nilly.

I carry Remington Golden Saber 124 gr.+P in my Glock 19 however any of the American Manufactured Premium Lines of ammunition that have been mentioned should do you just fine as long as it is reliable in you firearm.

Its not just about the grain or expansion or a hot load. I don't pretend to speak for anyone else, but I would say the placement of your bullet is more important than JHP, XTP, and so on...
This little beauty is my 9mm short (.380). I'm always carrying Hornaday personal defense rounds in here. 13+1 to be exact.

I like the Hornady Critical Defense (in .45acp) or the Rem. Golden Saber ( in 9mm). Haven't quite made up my mind on the .40 cal yet. But the golden saber is really my favorite for my 9mm.s.
