Firearms ammunition is not mailable period. (meaning no USPS)
You must ship via a common carrier such as UPS or FedEx using GROUND only.
The only labeling requirement is the box must be labeled with an ORM-D label.

ORM-D has to be in 1 inch letters with a box around it. The one time we sent ammo back to a manufacturer and 2 times we received it was via UPS.

Are you in Alaska? May want to check about shipping ammo. I checked USA Ammo and they don't ship from what I could find to Alaska, or Hawaii...

Oh, and it can't be transported via passenger air (so fedex and UPS are out, well, actually it can... but they won't)

So you have to send it on the slow boat
sure you don't want to sell it in state?

Sure would rather sell in state but thought if I could advertise nationally it would sell quicker. Wil ask a FFL I guess they must get it here somehow.

There is no requirement for 1 inch letters.

§ 172.316 Packagings containing materials classed as ORM-D.
(a) Each non-bulk packaging containing a material classed as ORM-D must be marked on at least one side or end with the ORM-D designation immediately following or below the proper shipping name of the material. The ORM designation must be placed within a rectangle that is approximately 6.3 mm (0.25 inches) larger on each side than the designation. The designation for ORM-D must be:

(1) Until December 31, 2012, ORM–D–AIR for an ORM–D that is prepared for air shipment and packaged in accordance with §§173.63, 173.150 through 173.155, 173.306 and the applicable requirements in §173.27.

(2) Until December 31, 2013, ORM–D for an ORM–D that is packaged in accordance with §§173.63, 173.150 through 173.155 and 173.306.

(b) When the ORM-D marking including the proper shipping name can not be affixed on the package surface, it may be on an attached tag.

(c) The marking ORM-D is the certification by the person offering the packaging for transportation that the material is properly described, classed, packaged, marked and labeled (when appropriate) and in proper condition for transportation according to the applicable regulations of this subchapter. This form of certification does not preclude the requirement for a certificate on a shipping paper when required by subpart C of this part.

In addition to ORM-D, the label must also state, "Cartridges, Small Arms" above the letters "ORM-D".

You could print this label out and tape it on the box to be legal:

One inch is what we were told, Sir. by the manufacture we had to send ammo back to. I'm not wrong in what I was told. Maybe the official representative was misinformed.

Additionally, UPS retail stores (and I believe FedEx retail stores) are not allowed to ship ammo, by company policy. You must ship it from one of their shipping centers.

In my experience, this isn't necessarily true. When my wife and I had to return ammo to a major manufacturer, we took it to our local "Copy and Ship", which is also a pick-up spot for UPS. We had no problems.

It is UPS's policy not to accept ammo shipments at retail stores. That doesn't mean some stores won't take it.

Thanks for all the replies, I guess I will have to go to the shipper I will actually be dealing with. Sounds like theres a lot of regional variation.
I actually bought this from a Friend who had them shipped to Alaska 4-5 years ago. It seems like I remember him talking me into adding to his order because the Haz-Mat fee was the same, 1 box or 100.

Are you guys sure it is hazmat? I don't think fully assembled ammunition counts as hazmat, only ORM-D. Some UPS/FedEx employees may be ignorant of their own policies.

Hazmat would be something like powder, I think. That has a separate fee and restrictions. There should be no special fees to send regular ammo.

ORM-D is a classification of HAZMAT. It is just HAZMAT that only requires labeling and not any kind of packaging or certification, and cannot go by air. If you are going to send it by air, then it does has to be certified like the other classifications of HAZMAT.

NO HAZMAT FEE- unless somebody they are buying from exceeds the ORM-D limit per a box (30kg)
unless you are shipping powder and primers,
and many guys, when they get the money to do it, are more than willing to let some buddies jump in on the deal, Span, AFF, TOTEM etc. do Less Than Load shipments and consolidations. But you pay for it, Span has a minimum that runs $130 after fuel surcharge.
