Got a New One For You Guys: Someone Swapped My M1 Garand Stock

As beautiful as the CMP stock is, I personally like the "new" stock a little better. There are probably stories in that old, beat up wood as to where it has been or what it has seen that the CMP stock doesn't have. But that is a frustrating scenario though.

I'm with the guy that said to check and double check the serial number because you may have picked up the wrong gun....I have a buddy that went on a hunt last fall several states away at some sort of hunting resort. He ended up coming home with the wrong shotgun. He had a time tracking down his gun and making the swap.

There was just a guy that posted a few weeks back that grabbed the wrong range bag when he left...the guy shooting next to him had the same range bag as him and he walked home with someone else's 1911...I'm guessing something like this happened.

Per Andrew Wyatt's request:

The serial number has now been quadruple checked: same October 1943 Springfield. I think the most likely answer is going to be I left the car unlocked for a time at the CMP. I don't think I left it unlocked though. I had the Garand, a M1911A1 (carry), and a Glock 23G3 (back-up) in the car and I was being extra vigil during the trip. But I've been wrong before...

This is ridiculous!!! :banghead: You should check to see if you have both of your kidneys!! I'm still going with alien abduction or one very stealthy individual who works in room service (the night shift obviously). :scrutiny:

So, lemme see if I get the theory here. Someone randomly opened up your vehicle, and swapped the stock (not that big of a deal) but also both hand guards (requiring quite a but more work) while you were parked in the CMP south store parking lot?

I suggest you call the store and report the incident -- they have a security camera that is mounted on the corner of the building closest to the street and the parking lot, and aims at the parking lot.

There's video of this alien abduction, if that's what happened.

This is either a troll or you have the worst luck known to man.

Lets think rationally. If this was some random person, what are the odds that they had the same rifle that was in the car they broke into? What are the odds they would have that rifle on them at the very time they got into your car? What are the odds that they would or could do a complete stock swap without someone noticing?

You sir, Have been screwed over by someone who knows you, knew where you'd be, knew what you had in your car and knew how long you'd be gone.

This is a practical joke me thinks, or a crappy troll.

If it were me, I would have just stolen your rifle, done the swap at my house in the A/C. Then disposed of your receiver and my old stock in the back yard under 4 feet of dirt.

This is exactly why I don't get the situation. I invite any and all individuals to review my past posts and determine themselves if I have a history of "trolling".

Well, lets deal with the present. I've had a previous stock crack on me several years ago. The CMP said they suspected that the stock had launched grenades in the past, and sent me a replacement. Because of this fact, I have reservations about using this stock.

So, can anyone point me in the direction of a complete M1 stock in decent shape for under $150.00? $150 is the cost of a new stock from the CMP.

I like the "new" stock. Keep it. Historically correct military firearms should have a beat up old stock, they don't look right with a brand new one that looks perfect.

With the new stock it looks like it fought plenty of Germans or Japanese.

And it definitely has to be one of your buddies pulling a joke on you.

someone swapped out my wallet. I left the house with $1000 bucks. I went around town, to work, etc. It was in my pocket the whole time. When i got home and put it on my desk, i freaked. It only had $20.

lol, just yanking your chain

If they stole the furniture, why bother putting the junk furniture on it? Also, how would they know to steal YOUR furniture? Out of all the cars, why pick yours? How would they even know a rifle was in it?

Check your SN again. Short of that, it has to be someone messing with you.

On the other hand, when younger, I've accidentally entered a wrong apt. (they all look the same, plus the nine was upside down) and got into a wrong vehicle (the other guy said it was his until he tried to start it and then looked in the glove box --where he found a stolen microchip and the papers of the plant manager!).

Perhaps you did grab the wrong rifle, or perhaps the last time you had it apart you put on the wrong parts/somebody else's parts. Short of that dude, I don't have a clue. It has to be one of the rationalizations on here, because there isn't much else to work with...

"Got any buddies that went with you who are pranksters?"
EXACTLY. This whole thing smacks of an insider practical joke being played with great effect on YOU !

Someone has to be playing a prank. No way someone would steal the new wood and install the old.
Remove gas screw , with tool, remove gas lock, drive off gas cylinder, slide off front handguard, drive out pin (hammer and punch) that holds on lower band, remove lower band, remove rear handguard.
Install old wood in reverse order
Nope didnt happen, someone is laughing their butt off right now at the joke they pulled

do you have any buddies that are close with your wife? (im assuming she had access to an extra set of keys)
X2: Again and Exactly. This is an inside job. Pure and simple. Wait a bit before you go buy another stock because after the responsible parties pick themselves up off the floor when reading this thread they will more probably than not be giving you back your stock.

I kunfess. I dood it. I bot a old beet up stok, den drived all da way to Dallus an' swopped 'em. An' I duzn't even has a M1. I dood it cuz I likes me sum purdy wood.:)
