Anybody out there have any experience with ordering some from hardware suppliers or getting 'em from Lowes/Home Depot/Fastenal, etc (local stores)?

I know Powder River has 'em, but they're $12 for 3 pins, and being the cheap SOB that I am (and I know a few XD owners that would take some), I'm looking at Grainger's site and see Spring Pins
Of the pins on the page, I'm assuming the replacement for the XD would be the 1/8" x 7/16" Spring Pin? (100 pins per bag):

Powder River sez they're 3mm x 11mm-looking at Grainger's offerings, I'm guessing the 1/8" x 7/16" spring pin would fit?
3mm = .118110”
1/8” = .1250”

11mm = .433070”
7/16” = .4375”

For a spring pin to work properly they need to have the correct compression, the .125 pin won't and I bet you have a hard time getting the 7/16 in the hole.

If 12 bucks is too much, look for metric pins somewhere. Fastenal or some similar place should be able to get boxes of them. Then again it'll cost more than $12, so unless you have 500 xd owing friends lined up you're probably better off springing(pun intended) for the $12.

Iff'n my figures are correct, it would require only .00689" of compression to get to 3mm-'course, it's all estimates as I don't know exactly what size the hole is, or how over/undersized (gotta be oversized?) 3mm might be, and how much more/less a coiled pin might compress vs a spring pin.

7/16 is the length-I'd think the length might be OK-the firing pin has a slot the pin fits into, so I'd think you have a little play on the length.

I tried Fastenal online-I don't even see any metric sizes listed under coiled pins, and in the only 1/8" pin they have listed, 1/2" is the shortest length they have.

Grainger seems to have a much better selection, and their descriptions/pictures are much more detailed.

Still Googling with little luck-Knapp Fasteners out of Canada has 3mm x 12mm, but I try not to order anything outta Canada-since 9/11, it seems to take forever to get something shipped from out of country. I seem to be finding a number of 10/12mm length listings, but no 11mm.

How about some 3mm O-1 drill rod cut to 11mm length. A 3' piece of drill rod could make alot of pins for a couple of bucks.

oops! read it too fast, I didn't realize that 11mm was the length. I still bet the 1/8 is a struggle to get it in a 3mm hole. I didn't break out the machinist handbook but I'm sure there is a chart for spring pin fits. There is a chart for damn near everything in there.

I only deal with fastenal over the counter, but again they only sell in volume, so I bet you spend more than 12 bucks.

O1 drill rod ground and polished is nice stuff but that would only make solid pins, roll pins, spring pins, whatever you call them are formed spring steel.
