Those who've noticed my posts will know that Me and my Father are waiting on a rather large inheritance, and we're looking to expand on our collection. Invest in Gold, Silver, Brass, and Lead.
My dad wants to start proactively hunting Hogs, but it's a bit difficult to do with his situation. His neck's held together with a titanium plate and a chunk from his hip, and it hasn't healed up as well as one would hope. The recoil from a good, hard-hitting rifle could very well put him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
He was looking(Read: Drooling) over a DPMS AR-10 Heavy Barrel in .308 up at our local LGS, and while the guy that works there was pretty good on selling the fact that the mass alone would soften the recoil. I'm not as sure.
My dad is retired Air Force, a Base Cop, spent his entire tour babysitting Nukes in South Dakota, carrying an M16. He flat loves the platform, and I would like to be able to find something that he can shoot without ending up on the floor in pain.
What soft-shooting calibers are out there that are effective against hogs? Specifically, what can you jam down the throat of the AR-platform that won't break his neck? What other choices are out there in semi-auto for the recoil sensitive?
He's not fond of the Russian designs, due to an ND/AD/Malfunction we had with an SKS punching a hole through the ceiling with no one touching the trigger. Doesn't like the AK platform for whatever reasons.
Frankly, I just want to point him in the right direction of a good, dependable rifle that won't cripple him any more than he already is. I'd hate our first Father/Son hunting trip to end with him in a wheelchair.
