Those who've noticed my posts will know that Me and my Father are waiting on a rather large inheritance, and we're looking to expand on our collection. Invest in Gold, Silver, Brass, and Lead. :D

My dad wants to start proactively hunting Hogs, but it's a bit difficult to do with his situation. His neck's held together with a titanium plate and a chunk from his hip, and it hasn't healed up as well as one would hope. The recoil from a good, hard-hitting rifle could very well put him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

He was looking(Read: Drooling) over a DPMS AR-10 Heavy Barrel in .308 up at our local LGS, and while the guy that works there was pretty good on selling the fact that the mass alone would soften the recoil. I'm not as sure.

My dad is retired Air Force, a Base Cop, spent his entire tour babysitting Nukes in South Dakota, carrying an M16. He flat loves the platform, and I would like to be able to find something that he can shoot without ending up on the floor in pain.

What soft-shooting calibers are out there that are effective against hogs? Specifically, what can you jam down the throat of the AR-platform that won't break his neck? What other choices are out there in semi-auto for the recoil sensitive?

He's not fond of the Russian designs, due to an ND/AD/Malfunction we had with an SKS punching a hole through the ceiling with no one touching the trigger. Doesn't like the AK platform for whatever reasons.

Frankly, I just want to point him in the right direction of a good, dependable rifle that won't cripple him any more than he already is. I'd hate our first Father/Son hunting trip to end with him in a wheelchair.

My left shoulder needs to be replaced

My right shoulder has bone spurs that are wearing my rotator cuff in half, and they want to relocate my bicep to help with tendonicetes (pain)

I need a rod or plate in my neck

My left hip needs a bone densety(spelling) scan

The reason for the stats is, I can't handle recoil anymore and I can't carry something heavy or drag it far.

The 6.8 I have found works best for me.

6.8 SPC might be a good solution if he likes AR's. Recoil is mild, and the rifle will be a lot lighter than an AR10. If he has skeletal problems carrying a heavy AR10 may be a problem. I have an SBR in 6.8 that's nice and light but still has very light recoil.

If it is that serious, I would not suggest any full size rifle round. If it is really just hog/ deer sized game I would suggest a 7.62X39mm SKS, or Saiga with some type of scope mabye or something like that.

You know a cheap answer - 7.62x39 - just fine for even large hogs and cheap to practice. However large your inheritance it will never be enough to satisfy all the wants you may have.

300 BLK would be an excellent choice out to 100 yards or so on a hog. I'll also second the 6.5 Grendel for farther shots. 6.8 would probably work too, but I have no personal experience with that round.

Another one here for the 6.8 SPC. I would go with an A2 stock then weight it so that the mass of the rifle will reduce recoil. Only burden then is lugging it around, but with a good sling you shouldn't have to much of a problem.

I think any AR-10 style is likely too heavy. I can also attest that a .308 AR-10 style (DPMS LR-308) while having less recoil than any other semiauto .308 I've shot, still has more than I would recommend for someone with the conditions you describe.

I think a 6.8 SPC AR with a muzzle brake would be ideal. A 300BLK or a 6.5G would also be reasonable options. Even a 5.56 AR might be worth considering with careful bullet selection (bonded soft points or solid copper tipped).

7.62x39 upper on an AR. Approximate .30-30 power in a familiar automatic with name brand hunting ammo and cheap plinking surplus available.
There are allegedly reliable magazines now available.
They say.

223 is a great low recoil round I say Mini-14 or AR-15. Since you're after hogs, it's not a good choice. I recommend an SKS in 7.62x39 minimum. Hogs are tough things and don't really have a tendency to die quickly, even from grievous wounds.

If he likes the weight of the AR-10 then I would go .260 rem or .243.Win, they both will put down hogs or deer with no problem and recoil will be nil.

Another one here for the 6.8spc BUT if he is in love with the AR 10 and the added couple of pounds for the larger platform is not an issue, I would say go with the 7mm.08. Has about half the recoil of the .308 and, loaded with some good 139gr hornady interlocks, will lay the smack down on any hog or deer than walks.

Too bad he's not a fan of the AK platform. Modern AK-74s with the real muzzle brake have almost no recoil at all. I love mine and my wife loves it too for that very reason.

I'd also suggest .300blk or 6.8spc. I believe sims labs now makes direct fit limbsaver recoil pads for the AR stock to soften it even more. And since it uses a standard sized lower you can experiment with other uppers/calibers later on from .22lr up to .50 beowulf (most .308 AR receivers are not interchangeable between brands IIRC)

Best sissy kicker I have ever used was a 6.5x55, recoil is so light a small child could use it, the performance on deer is killer. 243s are not bad either if you like being able to buy ammo at any wal-mart.
