Man is the apex predator. An environment without man taking wolves is not a natural environment, it's a zoo.

A environment without man IS a natural environment.

To the OP do they normally do those type of checkpoints up there???

"A environment without man IS a natural environment."

I am confused about your statement. Are you saying people are not natural?

Only in Antarctica.

Agreed. It doesn't matter if you believe in evolution or what the Good Book says. Humans have been hunting for a gosh darn long time.

Some are not.....

Just dont believe we are a part of their natural ecosystem... But we like to interfere with a whole lot of stuff....

man...sometimes I forget what it's like to not have caliber limitations for controlled hunts. congrats on the wolf, hopefully many many many more will also get one

Not sure this is the right subforum for you.

Ha Ive been an active hunter for 30+ years. Just cause I believe man has screwed up and will continue to screw up entire ecosystems doesnt mean I am against hunting or hunting wolf.

I have been pulled over there in Bonner with a boat load of animals.
When they heard what area I was hunting, they waved me through.

I got pulled over last Thursday at a different MT check point, and the foxy biologist used a crow bar to pry open my deer's mouth to look at the teeth.

I did have a wolf trot passed me on a shoreline at 50 yards while elk hunting 4 years ago. I thought it was a coyote until someone pointed out that it trotted with flicks of the wrist and it had a big head.

The common animals you see in North America today all came across the Bering land bridge from Asia right along with the people that were hunting them. Those animals replaced those that existed here prior to that migration. Back in the old world, man (and his predecessors) were hunting for a million years - or however far back you want to characterize those bipedal tool-using creatures as "men".

Man has always used his brain to hunt. In the past he used deadfalls, snares, fire, dogs, cheetahs, falcons, natural features (dead-end valleys, "buffalo jumps") or whatever else he could turn to his advantage. Today he uses a rifle. He is an integral part of the environment.

The only thing that has changed is that there are more of us, so we have legal prohibitions like seasons and limits to protect the animal populations. We have also developed a code of ethics which is quite a new thing (relatively speaking) to hunters.

Tarosean, they usually do have checkpoints at chokepoints close to cities. You are required to pull over whether or not you harvested something, however, I'm sure a number of people pass right on by.

Thanks for the comments! Glad to have contributed to wolf management :)

It looks like the hunt might get extended until Jan 31st. The number of wolves being harvested looks to be slowing down http://fwp.mt.gov/hunting/planahunt/huntingGuides/wolf
