Gun-toting grandmother says alleged robbery suspect messed with the wrong person

By MARGARET BAKER - [email protected]

OCEAN SPRINGS -- Phyllis Gigl said two alleged robbers messed with the wrong person when they conspired to steal her purse and she pulled a .380-caliber handgun out of a holster in her pants and pointed it their way.

She had a message for the suspects today: “You messed with the wrong grandmother.”

Way to go Grandma!

Way to exercise control over the situation too. Under that kind of stress, I wonder how many folks would of actually pulled the trigger.

I noticed she was using a .380 pistol. I know small 380's have been around for quite some time, but it seems that recently there has been an explosion in the very small 380 market. Like the LCP, Bodyguard etc. Im glad to see it. I think it means that people who ordinarily wouldn't carry like this grandmother are now able to because the small 380's are cheap, light and easy to conceal.

Heck, I can see my wife doing this and we're not grand parents for (hopefully) another 8+ years.

Way to go! No shots fired, perps' objective not met.

I love this stuff! Back in the 90s I was an NRA instructor and in one of our Self Defense for Women classes I had an 82 year old grandmother that just totally blew everyone's minds. She fired .22 Ruger pistols, .38 S&W revolvers, .45 ACP 1911s and then finished the class with a 20 ga. pump shotgun on a bad guy target moving towards her at high speed. I was the Range Officer on her station and when she had emptied the shotgun the target had a 24 in. hole blown out of the center and she turned her head (muzzle still on target) and said to me "This is FUN!!" I almost feel sorry for anybody who messes with that Grandmother. Almost. Mess with her and it won't end well. GO GRANDMA!!!!

A lady I work with said there's nothing you can't fix with a 30-06.

Don't mess with southern women. :D

Several years ago, my elderly Great Aunt who lived alone was attacked. Two thugs tried breaking into her small home at night while she was in bed. She started screaming and they yelled at her to shut up because they were going to come in and kill her. She had an old .32 revolver that her deceased husband had left her 30 years previous. She got it from under her mattress and fired through the door at them. They went to another door and tried to get in, but once again she fired at them. They finally scrambled away yelling, "Let's get out of here, that crazy bxxxxx has a gun.

They were later caught and prosecuted. When my Aunt was interviewed by the local news, she said that next time she won't miss.

My girlfriend and I were eating right down the road from that Wal-Mart the night that happened. She's just gotten her CC and was telling me that she couldn't ever see a need to carry to a grocery store ("especially around here"). I suspect that we're about to spend the day looking for holsters for her now.

I'm glad that Granny is okay.

Wonder how do you explain THAT to your cell-mate when you get tossed in jail? "

My granma grew up during rough times (dustbowl).
She would have shot them both, then reloaded.
She had no sense of humor with lawbreakers.

I'm not sure how light they are but according to the picture, she had a Bersa which is all metal.

I don't think their cell mates would receive that with a straight face. :D

Also advances in ammunition have made the .380 considerably more potent than it used to be. Newer powders can produce higher velocity without the danger of excessive chamber pressure along with less muzzle flash from shorter barrels. Modern bullet design can provide better expansion and still maintain acceptable penetration.

My Grandma didn't take any guff but I have no idea if she packed. I wouldn't be surprised now that I think of it.
