Stevens 200 Project (Stock questions)

http://sharpshootersupply.com/ take a look around there. E.R. Shaw, and Shilen, both offer drop in barrels for the Savage. Im not sure who else has them, but just search savage 110 barrel on google and watch the plethora pop up.
Installing a single barrel probably isnt worth the cost of the wrench and gauges, if your local smith will charge you a fair rate...it should honestly only take about 15mins to change out a savage tube, if he/she has the tools and you request no other work.
Trigger wise, i like Timney, but ive heard good things about Jard. Fitting a target accu-trigger would also be a good option, i belive its pretty easy, who ill have to pull apart my .243 to be sure.
I believe the 200s are 4.40 same as the other savage short actions, i could be wrong tho as i dont have one here to measure.
If your rifles magazine stays in the stock is a centerfeed, if it comes out with the action its a staggered box.

I would stay away from sharpshootersupply. Just try to speak to them in person, and you will see what I mean. I would either look at sin-arms.com, or northland shooters supply if you want a quality barrel.

I went through the same build process as you, except I started with a stevens 200 long action. I went with a timney trigger, cdi bottom metal, and a manners stock.

I highly recommend Manners stocks for your build. The stock is a one time purchase, and will pay dividends each time you shoot the rifle. Buy once, cry once when it comes to one time cost items.

My stevens 200 turned out like this, couldn't be happier.

What cartridge are you going with on the new barrel? An 8 twist 223 ackley, with a proper throat built to shoot from the long plastic ai mags, would be one heck of a fun rifle.

Look at McGowen for Savage barrels. Mine shoots 1/2" groups and it's a hunting rifle (.358 WSSM, 22", 1:14" Savage Magnum taper)

Under $300 and they did all the smith work (chambering, tapering, finishing, crowning, and installing/headspacing the barrel).

The stock trigger can be adjusted without too much hassle. Google it. I did the trigger adjustment on my 110FP and breaks like an icicle at 2.5# with no takeup and just a hint of overtravel. IOW, save the trigger for last if you just can't get it to work for you.

I got a Stevens 200 in 7mm-08, threw the junky scope it came with away. didnt mess with anythng else, it shot dime groups. got me a beautiful walnut stock from Boyds. Now I got a beautiful, low price tack driver in a helluva all around cartridge.

dont quite understand, paying more for a barrel than for the original rifle together. as far as the Boyds stock, just looked for a replacement stock for a Savage model 10, make sure you order for the right magazine configurement. I love my "new" model 200.

For some applications a top of the line barrel is worthwhile, for what i do its usually not lol. I have a boyds walnut stock on my old 700 that i had rebarreled by ershaw, i like them. Check boyds website, cant rember the url off hand, just google it lol.

What paying more gets you is a custom quality barrel in the exact caliber, length, contour, finish, and type of steel that you want. This may not be possible with the OEM supplied barrel.
Another advantage is it may clean much better than a factory tube.
Other prefit makers not mentioned are Benchmark and Pac-nor.
