AK 47 milled vs stamped

If your looking for a high quality AK, action a Saiga is a good choice espically if you buy one converted by Arsenal. It's more cost effective to convert yourself(its also easy to make them accept standard ak mags) ..depending on your choice of furniture, sights etc. A second choice, simply because it's more cash, and not as easy to make them accept standard AK mags, (and the slant cut receiver limits your after market stock choices) would be the Vepr. Although they do boast a reputation for greater accuracy than other AKs.

Well I'm young and don't know as much as some of you guys and was just wondering what would be the best brush gun deer bullet in the x39. I saw some Corbon loads that were 150 grain and said they shot 2500 fps. To me it sounds like the best deer bullet for that gun so far as I know of

After doing a bit more "research", I think I've settled on the Arsenol/Saiga. Is Bud's price of $800 typical for this model?

It's sort of at the high end of what I'd consider "normal" for an SGL 21. I've recently seen them locally for about $720 at a few places and online they were slightly cheaper than that a month or so ago. The price they're quoting you isn't horrible but I'd look around a little bit first. You might be able to do a little better.

The milled ones are heavier. Some folks say they are more accurate, but I've not seen definitive proof that that is across-the-board true.

I agree:
I have a milled AK and there is no "REAL" accuracy difference. Don't get me wrong I love my Milled AK but it would not stop me from buying a stamped one in the future if I decided to. I have shot the stamped ones and they are just fine.

The LGS's are significantly more than online prices.

One of our LGS's moves enough volume that he basically just tacks $40 on to the wholesale price of whatever he has and sells it that way. Another one managed to set up shop on land owned by the railroad and through some legal loophole I've never asked about it means we don't have to pay sales tax when we buy there. Between the two I can almost always get a sweet deal on whatever I want.

I just paid $849+tax for a NY neutered Arsenal. That's the going price around here at the LGS. If I ordered online I'd have to pay shipping and transfer fee, so it about worked out. I have also heard that they are not without an occasional defect, so it pays to inspect it at the shop.

Is there a super-duper Saiga out there? I asked my FFL guy (always beats the sale prices of the LGSs by 10% or more) to get me a price on an "Arsenal Saiga AK47". He sent me back a price for a milled one with wood furniture out the door >$2000. Now, I didn't put SGL21 or "conversion" in my request and he does deal in NFA merchandise, but is there a $2K semi AK out there on the wholesale market?

Yes, it's the Arsenal SA M-7. As your FFL guy said it's a milled receiver rifle and a clone of the original AK 47 that Kalashnikov designed back in the '40s. It sounds like you'll need to ask him specifically for a price on an Arsenal SGL 21. Please bear in mind that the SGL 21 comes in a variety of models with the SGl 21-61 (black, polymer, warsaw length fixed stock) being the cheapest and the SGL 21-94 (black, polymer, warsaw length side folding stock) typically being about $300 more. You may want to be really specific what you want when you ask him again.

The ORIGINAL AK-47 was stamped. The Soviets' manufacturing processes weren't up to the task of making a reliable stamped gun, so the design was revised into a milled substitute that was a little easier to make. So this is a clone of the stop-gap milled version the Soviets came up with until they could get the stamped version to work, which they didn't do until 1959 with the AKM.

Its more economonical if all you want is a bolted on trigger guard and pistol grip. If you want a threaded barrel, properly riveted trigger guard, AK handguards, traditional front sight/bayonet lug and/or 74 muzzle brake, it is far cheaper to buy an Arsenal unless you happen to hvae some very specialized tools laying around.

all the ones you listed are bad for different reasons.

Wasr are just known for being problematic

PAPs are single stack and milling out the magazine well could be difficult plus its receivers weird angle can make it difficult to convert to to the pistol grip formation.

The ATI "milled" receivers have horrible reps on the internet just google reviews sometime.

Check out some other threads on this matter to find a better alternative

I just picked up a Vector Arms AK-47 locally for $600. (Bulgarian Under-folder) Stamped receiver with wood furniture up front makes the weight very manageable. Super quality and shoots extremely well - couldn't be happier.
(It's the one in the middle) :D
