Hello everyone, I have been searching for information on my issue for a while and can't find exactly my situation so figured I would bring it to you guys on the forums.

I purchased a glock23 from one of my superior's while in the Marine Corps in North Carolina back in 2006. He drew up a short bill of sale, but at this time I can not even find it, and it didn't have his firearms id number on it anyways. I have ZERO way of tracking this person down now. I never had a firearms permit in North Carolina and now i am located back home in NJ I still do not have a permit here either. The gun sat in storage since I moved, now I am finally applying for my firearms permit here in NJ along with 2 permits for pistol purchases and awaiting for approval. How do I go about making sure this gun is legal and registered? Thank you for any help!

There is no mandatory gun registration in NJ. Was the sale legal to begin with? By that I mean, at the time of the purchase, were you both residents of the same state, and follow applicable state laws? If so, there is nothing you have to do to take you handgun with you to NJ. There are a few caveats however.

1. Magazine capacity has to be 15 rounds or less. If more, those magazines are illegal, and leave them out of NJ.
2. Follow NJ transportation laws, and/or FOPA, whichever is applicable at the time of your travel.
3. Make sure you only keep and use your firearm at the specifically exempted locations.

Again, you do not need to have a NJ FPID to have a firearm.
