Handgun Permit < 21? On a mission.

Dear Mr. Fletcher,

Thank you for your question regarding persons under the age of 21
obtaining pistol purchase permits.

You are correct, the North Carolina General Statutes and Federal Law
are silent regarding the issue of a person obtaining a permit who is 18,
19, or 20 years of age for a person to person transfer.

However, persons under the age of 21 are not allowed to obtain pistol
purchase permits in Wake County, NC pursuant to Sheriff's Policy. If a
Sheriff in another county decided he or she wanted to issue a permit to an
18 year old, it would not be illegal under state or federal law, as long as
the transfer of the weapon did not involve an FFL.

The short answer is that Sheriff's Policy clarifies the gray area, or
silence of the state and federal statutes.

I've met the good detective. He resides in an office next to the lady who takes you money for pistol permits and CCW licenses.

Wait until you are 21, get your CCW and then you don't have to worry about the pistol permits.

Even in the PRNJ you only have to be 18 to buy a handgun, THOUGH it has to be through a private sale?? can NOT buy from an FFL??

Makes alot of sense, doesnt it??

^ Yep. jefnvk summed that up pretty well with:

I can buy from a guy selling pistols out of his trunk in a parking lot, but not from my gun store where they will background check me

Now to look around and hope that there might be a county in NC that issues non-resident permits Probably next to no chance, but I've got some time at my disposal



EDIT: From a relatively short search, the following counties in NC appear to issue permits to residents 18 years of age (I only checked a few counties, maybe 10, so this is just a start):

Haywood, Forsyth, Pitt, Catawba, Nash
