I just bought a Mossberg 500 that isn't listed on their website. It's basically the 12 gauge cruiser persuader pictured here:

http://www.mossberg.com/images/Mossberg_Guns/930/NEW/50411.jpg

Unlike the this one they have listed, however, this one has a shorty stock with only a 13" length of pull. It has an 18 1/2" barrel. It's a real short handling weapon.

The tag read as follows:

"Mossberg 500 12 GA HD"

It was new in box at the local gun shop. Has anyone seen these before? It's super comfy to handle for me, especially because of the short length of pull. It's light, too. It holds 6 rounds (I believe that's with one in the chamber already).

Anyone have one of these? Is this like a one-off for this shop? It doesn't look like this one is listed on their site with the short stock.

Also, does anyone have any experience shooting one of these with the short LOP? Does it add to the kick? Will my wife shy away from using this thing?

500's come in so many configurations Mossberg themselves can't keep up let alone we consumers.
They have a number of products available in the catalog that are not found on the website. I'm not surprised you found a model the website doesn't list.
The 500 is one of the more ubiquitous platforms around and has been around seemingly forever and will always be around.
It has as many aftermarket products available as the 870 and is as easy to work on as any other pump shotgun.
Unless you paid an exorbitant price for it Shoot it and have fun learning the platform.

It cost $340, which may be a bit more than average since this local gunshop isn't know for it's prices. I feel it's worth it, though, because it has the configuration I was looking for and it's super comfy to handle.

Throw a softer recoil pad on it & blast away. The stock pads are sharp-edged and hard, contributing to "not fun" with magnum shells. I cut the stocks on both my Mossies back an inch or so giving a little under the 13" LOP you got. Made a big difference in fit & comfort while shooting.

What pad would work well? Should I just get whatever limbsaver works for the 500?

Yup, LimbSavers are what I use and they work dandy. Really tames the thump with 3 1/2" shells in the 835, same same for my 500 with turkey loads.

Looks like a very useful configuration to me. There's room in front of the forearm on the magazine tube for a short clamp-on light rail (http://www.amazon.com/STREAMLIGHT-Mag-Tube-Rail-Series/dp/B001E8CW4O/ref=pd_cp_hi_1 for example) that will allow easy mounting of a good weapon light. It has sling swivels in place.

The shotguns here (all 870s) have 12.5" LOP stocks, modified to fit my wife. She's about a foot shorter than I am, but I have adapted to the shorter stocks and now prefer them. I wouldn't get too bent out of shape over the factory recoil pad, unless it just doesn't help enough. Premium recoil pads are nice, but may not be necessary if a shooter uses good form and has no physical problems. If your wife is a newbie to shotguns, start her out with the lightest loads you can find for the first few outings, and teach her (or get someone to teach her) a proper gun mount and good form, as well as evaluating gun fit.

Looks like a great choice to me...

I called Mossberg about a synthetic youth stock for my 20 gauge. What I got was a choice between the Bantam 12" LOP and the Youth 13" LOP with the additional 1" on the recoil/ butt pad. I opted for the Bantam 12". I really like the *Shooters Friend Recoil Pad* that can be bought amazon.com or Cabelas for $19.99. I need to buy a second one and have them on both of my SG's all the time.

Wow!

You guys must all wear body armor.

Or just like to get hit in the nose with your thumb!

My 500 sports a Choate rear stock with adjustible spacers and recoil pad. The spacers and pad interlock each other then two long butt plate (recoil pad) screws hold them all together. I can adjust long - for summer tee shirts or short - for heavy coats in winter, with many layers of clothes.

The pistol grip that was on it just had to go.
I ended up giving it away at a yard sale! I'm such a nice guy!
No wonder I'm broke.

Nope.

Just don't wrap your thumb around the small of the stock, and it won't be a problem. With the 870s I just put my thumb over on the trigger finger knuckle where it's out of the way. With the Mossberg it's almost instinctive, given where the safety is - just keep your thumb up there.

Just don't wrap your thumb around the small of the stock,
Real hard to maintain control of a shotgun with one hand and maintain a shooting position if you don't have your thumb wrapped around the stock.

Sometimes you have to open doors, or reload with the other hand.

Or we have short arms. I put a Hogue Youth stock (12" LOP) on my Mossberg 500 that's my HD gun. I found it just a tad too short, so I put a Kick-Eze slip on pad over that, which brought it up to ~13", which is perfect for me.

Close. I know it varies some, but I personally used a 590A1 on boardings.

Didn't see a pic in the OP, but here is one of my regular Mossy 500s. Came with regular stock & pistol grip. Good little shotgun, not quite a 590, but close enough.

Someone cut the 535 find I have down to 13" and the stock recoil pad wasn't fitted, just bolted on as is. That was the only thing wrong with it, nearly new. I added a slip on Limbsaver and I'm ready for 3.5" T shot. :D Got it for 170 bucks, just couldn't resist. I didn't have a 3.5" gun, now I do, though I probably will continue using my 10 gauge for geese.

The recoil pad helps the shoulder, but the stock/gun needs to FIT to have minimum problems with recoil. It ain't just your shoulder. Drop too high or cast insufficient and you can wind up with a bloody cheek. I lowered my 500 by shimming because I was getting battered in this way, cut my cheek, would be bleeding like a stuck hog out duck hunting. Now, it's marvelous. :D My Winchester fits me as if tailor made, is a gas gun to boot. I don't even have a recoil pad on it. It's a 12 gauge, too. I can shoot that thing all day and enjoy it.

I have to have 14" length of pull unless I'm wearing heavy clothing which don't happen that often down here. I would have just passed up that 12" gun, no way I could get along with it unless I bought another longer stock for it. Everyone is different and one must fit the gun to oneself.

Fortunately with repeaters, one can shim to adjust things. I just got through with another session of messing with my SxS Spartan. I think I improved it, but the only reason is that the stock fits sloppy on the thing. With tangs extending into the stock the stock fitting over the action vertically, one cannot do much with a double for fitting. That Spartan has a gap at the top where the shim is and you can see the shim in the right side, moves the cast over since I'm a lefty and it lowered the drop a bit. There's gaps in the wood/metal fit like this, of course, but it wasn't fitted very well anyway and at least now it works. I think I actually have some left hand cast in it now, what I was after. I would like to get custom fitted wood on a decent O/U some day. But, Brownings tend to fit me pretty well, why I would like to get a Cynergy.
