I picked up a 12 Ga. Mossberg 500 with dual barrels the other day at Cabelas - 1 barrel for HD and the other for trap. Trap barrel BTW works great! So the questions:
Has anyone mounted a red dot on the Mossberg? If so - what mounts did you use?
Have you ever used it for trap?
What about for HD - think it'll work or are you just shooting from the hip so to speak? What ammo are you using for HD?
BTW - I love this gun - it's my fist shotgun (all others are rifles, pistols and revolvers). I may want to collect some more......

Clay targets are best shot with your eyes on the birds, not any form of sight. As long as your gun fits you properly, it should come up like an extension of your arm. When you point using your finger, you don't need a sight on the finger tip to get it on target - same idea with the shotgun barrel

I bought a picatinny rail that bolts on the top (pre-tapped holes) to mount a scope/red-dot, but that will be used for deer/turkey.

At HD distances, you shouldn't need any kind of sight assistance to hit center-mass.

When I shoot clays I don't even really aim down the sights, I just hold the gun naturally in my arms and point it, and that works great for me.

Using reduced recoil 00 buckshot for home defense. 5 in the tube, 1 in the chamber, all I have to do is flick the safety switch. However I don't have kids or anyone else nosing around my stuff so there's no worry of an accident.

If you look at the top of the receiver you will see 4 tiny screws.
A company called UTG (under the gun) makes a short rail that sits on the receiver and uses those screw holes. I got mine on E-Bay. It was well made and a perfect fit.

Make sure whatever you mount is well secured. I use mine for a 1" LED light and about the third time I fired it, the light went flying out of the mounting ring. No damage, but I was surprised. I thought I had it cranked down pretty good.

Yup, UTG, and I got mine from eBay, also. I also tried my streamlight TLR-3 on there and it fit fine. I'll probably get a cheap laser for S&G and mount it there, too.

For Home defense
Federal's LE 9-pellet LE132-00 load @ 1,145 fps with LR Flight Control (FC) wads
(civilian version is PD132-00). These hardened copper plated buckshot
The full-power version of 00 buckshot with FC is LE127-00 @ 1,325 fps.

For Practice
Any #6 birdshot or larger cheap at wallmart
