Got a CZ-58 (Century Arms) from JG Sales.

I was a little concerned because of what I'd read about Century but decided to risk it. Paid a bit under 600 with shipping, transfer fee, and extra mags.

Received the rifle with two extra rebuilt magazines. The rifle itself was in very good condition, the only exception being a bit of metal partially scraped off the flash suppressor. Took me 30 seconds with a file to fix that.

The rebuilt magazines would not lock into the rifle but the original magazine functioned fine.

Took it down to the range on post and my friends and I were able to reliably make 5-6" groups offhand at 80 yards. Placing plum sized rocks on a rail about 40 yards away.

Much, much easier to shoot and far more ergonomic than the AK.

Ran a variety of ammo through it and it went boom every time.

Being a lefty I plan on putting the ambidextrous safety and maybe the mag release on it. The handguard got quite hot after putting about 3 mags through it, so I might put one of the modernized handguards with raild and then use a MAGPUL angled grip on it.

Quite happy with it, and am really impressed by the design. Superior to both the AK and AR operating systems in my opinion. Wish CZ manufactured a modernized version of this in 5.56.

Check out Czechpoint.com, they're way ahead of you. I'm real happy with my VZ58, I think it's a much better execution of the "mid-level caliber carbine" concept than the AK can ever hope to be. My only issues were related to a modified AK drum that came with my purchase, which won't feed worth a damn. Hardly the VZ's fault, though :).

As soon as I can work up either a scope mount or better iron sights, this thing'll be downright nasty . Be sure to pick up some SKS/AK stripper clips; they're way faster for reloading empty magazines (not often we think to put empty mags in a gun and remove them full:D). The Czech clips work better, I'm told.

Now it's your turn to throw up some photos! :)

Being a lefty...
Some enterprising guy on Gunbroker has a Left Handed bolt carrier (and handle) for 175$...

You know, Czechpoint really should adapt their rifles for AK mags. It's a simple modification, and would make life so much easier for people. If you're going to make a completely new-production, modernized version, it just makes sense.

Barnbwt: I did see a 5.56 version on gunbroker, but didn't feel like paying more for a Warsaw Pact weapon than I did for my Spikes AR-15.

My understanding is that the 5.56 versions are manufactured here in the states by Czechpoint, not by CZ - am I right?

I just wanted a fun plinker that shot 7.62x39 and the CZ58 fills that role nicely.

Got the standard version and forked over the extra 19 bucks for a bayonnet. (Which looks as if it was hammered dull, gonna be a weekend project.)

Yeah. On .mil ones on full auto it's notably bad -- anything will get hot firing bursts through it, but the vz 58 seemed to get there faster than an M4 or AK or most anything else select fire I've gotten rounds through. That and not being a fan of the military issue folding stock are the only real complaints I have about the design, however.

Did somebody say 5.56mm SA vz-58? :D

Yes, that's mine, and yes, it is awesome. ;)

ToraBoraBlues, I looked on GB, didn't see one, as Czechpoint is swamped with 7.62x39mm version orders. The pistols in 7.62x39mm and 5.56mm will actually be here before the 5.56mm rifles hit the shelves. No, none of the SA vz-58 rifles from Czechpoint are made in the US, they are all imported from Czech Small Arms in the Czech Republic, and then made 922 compliant. Dan at CzechpointUSA was actually quite happy that the pistol versions don't have to have any 922 work done on them, and came come right in without any extra work.

Warden, I prefer the vz mags, and they are pretty cheap from Czechpoint. Tora, czech them out, http://www.czechpoint-usa.com/ , for all of your spare parts and magazine needs,

Don't look to buy one from GB, it's cheapest to buy new from Czechpoint proper. Their sight has them "out of stock" because they are horribly backordered due to demand at the moment, at 1140$. I believe Armoredman has one, and has loudly sung its praises. There is an AR magwell conversion for the gun that was also reportedly good.

They're expensive new, to be sure, but as well made as the some of the best AKs (and many ARs, I'm sure), and they are a new production item not available from anywhere else. I think the price will drop when CSA begins to run low on VZ58 parts kits and turns its main focus on the new platform. I keep hoping they'll come out with a .308 version (supposedly prototypes in Winchester were made way back in the day...)

Unlike most "Warsaw" countries, the Czechs are renowned gun-makers, going back hundreds of years, and have a very good manufacturing reputation. Czech Mausers (VZ24), SKS-alternates(VZ52), sidearms(CZ52 through 85 and VZ61), and carbines are nearly all considered superior to the arms fielded by their fellow nation-states.

If Armoredman ever gets bored and sells his VZ in 5.56, I'll snap it up in a heartbeat for a discount !:D

Damn that 5.56 variant ya got looks sweet. What I REALLY want is the CZ 805 if CZ ever makes a civi version for the US or sets up a plant here. Like a SCAR, but better.

The 805 MIGHT come here eventually, it is being discussed.

DISCOUNT? HAH! :) Not for sale, sorry! :D

Yes, this rifle rocks, great fun to shoot, reliable and accurate!

The CZ 805 purchase manual:
1) Move to ČR
2) Apply for collecting licence and exception to purchase
3) Purchase...
(There is sofar no civil version even on Czech market, but full auto is..)

Amigo, if I could speak Czech, I just might consider it - good beer, too.
BUT, Arizona gun laws are far better, and we import Pilsner Urquell. :)

I really don't get the they should use AR mags thing. Nobody expects an AR, FAL, M14, 10/22, mags to work. They are different rifles. duh.

I love my 2 vz2008.

It uses AR mags because I asked that the adapter be fitted, and AR mags are everywhere. It's not the only one that uses someone else's magazines, for instance, the semi-mythical KelTec RFB uses FAL mags. Sure there must be others, can't think of them off the top of my head right now.
Also, I get grief all the time that Czechpoint should offer a conversion so AK mags will work, and lose the bolt hold open feature. Yuck. Heavy mags with no hold open - pass.
The 5.56mm rifles normally just come with stock CSA 30 round magazines - the AR magwell is a user install-able kit.

Amen, if only I could find a rifle to use the mags...:D. I love how people harp on how expensive VZ mags are, too, when most ARs cost way more than the Century guns. FAL's, too, for that matter. At least the VZ's proprietary mags actually bring something to the table unlike the "mainstream" AK mags; lighter and bolt catch. The real question is why don't AKs take VZ mags? :p

The standard vz-58 magazines can be had for $15 each, http://www.czechpoint-usa.com/produ...magazine-with-us-made-parts-complete-surplus/. Compared to AK 30 rounders of unknown origin, like from Cheaper Than Dirt, this TAPCO plastic mag runs $8.99, http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/MAG-038 All of the cheaper mags listed there are plastic. The metal magazines, (since everyone goes on about the steel being stronger), are all more expensive that the CzechpointUSA vz-58 magazines.
That was just a quick peek at one seller, not meaning to compare ALL sellers, as there are probably some gun show bubbas with truckloads of beat up steel mags for $5 each. :)
