I have limited my my search to SIG or H&K. The varrios models have me totally confused-easy to do. I'm a hard-core S&W N Frame guy but feel the need for one. Don't care for some of the SIGS nontraditional 'space gun' look. It should be accurate, prolly the #1 priority., any mag over 12 would be plenty. Self defense not up there, mostly punching paper so carry a minor point.

What can I say? Any inputs greatly appreciated. Glocks not being considered.

Thanks to all who respond-Dan

Why limit to just Sig and HK? Great guns, but there are others that may fit you better. My choices are, and I own most of these:

Browning Hi Power
CZ-75 variant like an SP-01 or 75B
HK P7
Sig P228/P229
Wather PPQ

Had up to 7 SIG pistols, only have 3 left all SA only 1911s, Had a nice H&K P30L, really nice pistol, but I shot a Glock G34 way better, magazines ran nearly $60. For a pure range toy I would choose a 1911 in 9mm, STI Spartan runs about $650, Taurus PT1911 9mm for under $600, both should shoot rings around most DA/SA pistols right out of the box. If money was no object maybe a SIG P210, or S&W 952. I just sold off my last DA/SA pistol, a SIG P232 two-tone.

Well. money is an object. I've owned two 952s over the years and I wish I had one back. Had not considered a 1911 9mm. Need more info on that, I'll look into that and the CZ.

I need to get out my notepad and take notes !

Look for Nice used Hi-Powers, they are worth it.
I'm a big fan of all metal guns but am warming to Glocks a little. I had a Sig P250 SC that was too clunky for a SC Carry piece, plus the trigger started to wear on me. At first I didn't mind it but I eventually traded it in for a Kel-Tec P11 plus some goodies.

If you're not going to be carrying and just punching paper, how about an EAA Witness Elite Match made by Tanfoglio. It's SA only with a real sweet trigger.

"It should be accurate, prolly the #1 priority"

A SIG P226 of your choosing. Try one and I bet you will LOVE it. IMO a SIG P226 is well worth the investment for a lifetime of shooting pleasure.
I have two P226s and like shooting them both much better than my Son's CZ75 SP01 or other CZs that I have tried.

Also try a Walther PPQ if you get a chance - incredible poly pistol that also does extremely well as a range pistol.

^^^^^^ The Witness is another good choice. BTW, it is an Italian made clone of the CZ-75.

Between SIG and H&K I would probably go with a SIG P229 E2. Just like the ergonomics of the pistol, especially the grip portion of the frame. The rail is nice to have (mounted a SIG light and laser on it), as well as having great night sights.

Just curious...why are Glocks not considered?

I'd look at a Sig 226/S&W MP9/Beretta 92, or maybe a 1911-9MM like an STI for plinking.

But one 9MM only for me would have to be Glock, especially 9MM. Price, parts, accessories, accuracy, ease of use, reliability, mag selection...hard to beat them.

I'm doing the same search as you. I'm biased toward a DA/SA hammer-fired pistol, but on my only range day so far, I shot a 92FS, CZ75, SIG 226 and, just for fun, an XD9m. At least for that short time (2 boxes of ammo), I liked the XD best. Still not sure what I'll buy, but I'd say shoot everything you can get your hands on.

Well, I'm not a Sig or HK guy, but if you're looking for options by that manufacturer, I'd either consider an HK USP or Sig P2022.

Personally, I think both manufacturers are generally a little high priced for what you get, with the exception of the P2022. That would be my choice since I think it's a good looking gun and the price is right.

Glock makes one heck of a 9mm. You can't go wrong with a 26/19/17/34. Pics of mine below. I also have a H&K P2000sk in 9mm and a Sig P229 in .40, and while they are both fantastic guns, I like the Glock 26 better than the P2000sk overall. A Sig P226 9mm would be a great choice too if you weren't planning on carrying it. The Glock 19 would be a great all-around choice for both concealed carry and fun at the range. The H&K USP is also a superb gun.. lots of good 9mm guns out there. Good luck!

I bought a Certified Pre Owned (factory refurbished with a 1 year warranty) Sig P229 in .40 for around $500. For another $150 I bought a factorty 357 Sig barrel. Then I spent another $200 and bought a .22 caliber conversion kit. For around the cost of a new 229 I have a gun that can shoot 3 different calibers. For $389 I just ordered a police trade in Sig P6 (it's the police version of the P225 which is essentially a single stack version of the P229).

I would look at the trade in German P226's, the P228, and the P6's at Widener's. If you have an FFL who will do the transfer, this is a good route to go. http://www.wideners.com/itemview.cfm?dir=700|1012|1026

Well, all I buy and shoot is SIG Sauer. Not sure what you mean by "space gun" looks. The Beretta PX4s are definitely more along that description.

I would pass on every special version of SIG pistols and get the standard, or go for a German stamped slide model from the 90s. I'm not a fan of the e2 grip, if you have small hands, you should pay extra to get the gun to fit. Not the other way around. So it would suffice to say I like older SIGs. The last new one I got was in 2009 before the e2 crap started. If buying used, check the frame rails. If the previous owner was shooting it dry, it will be chewed up something fierce. Other than that, good to go.
