Check out Alliants load data, Reloader 15 looks like it works well in both calibers with 150 grain bullets. They advertise 2919 fps in the .308, and 2170 fps in 30-30. You might be able to get the 30-30 moving slightly faster with a different powder, but since it will be used in heavily wooded areas the deer will never notice the missing 100 fps.

I used IMR4064 with 150gr bullets with excellent accuracy. I am using that load for a Winchester. I use Varget and 160gr FTX for Marlin 336.

I like IMR 4064 for my .308 because it's a 18 1/2 inch carbine .Works very good in my 30-30's too.biker

My choice: 3031

This has proven to be a great med speed powder for me. I have used it in several different calibers with good success, including 30-30 and 308.

4895 or 4064 would also work fine.

OK, I talked him into doing it right and choosing a powder for each that might deliver the best performance in each.

He's going to give LVR a try in the 30-30 and Varget a try in the .308 Win. If he was going with 1 powder he was leaning towards IMR3031 and still might give that a try in the 30-30 in the future. For the 308, if he's not happy with Varget (which I doubt) he will try 4895, IMR4064 or BL-C(2). (but I feel he will like LVR in the 30-30 and Varget for the 308 just fine) He will probably load 150gr bullets for both but of course different 150gr bullets.

Thanks for all the discussion everyone, I appreciate it. He loaded his first 10 rounds of 30-30 a few days ago on my equipment while I talked him through the process. When he gets to shoot his new ammo I'll come back with a report.

If he is trying to save money and have a good load for both.
Have him get a 8 pound jug of WC844
I use 34gr load for 150 gr bullet in 30-30
I use 43gr load for 150 gr bullet in 308
Both loads are not top loads but shoot good groups.
Could use H335 if want commercial powder.

I would think WC846 would be a better choice than WC844 especially since that's the exact powder used in Military 7.62 NATO ammo.

Thats probably true. I use wc844 because it is my primary 223 powder. I have lots of it so try to make a load from it in all the calibers I can.

If my primary caliber was 308. WC846 would serve that role with a 223 load being secondary.

Its kind of a horse a piece between them though. There is not much difference between the 2.
