Looking to try a new powder (for me) for my 150gr 308 loads. So, which do ya like - AA2460, IMR4064, or Win748?

I've been using Hodgdon powders for the 308 and just wanna try something else. FWIW, I'm more interested in accuracy than speed.

For deer hunting loads, I use Win760 both in my wife's 7mm-08 and my .308 - 140 grain bullets in the 7mm-08 and 150 grain bullets in the .308. I think Win760 is a little slower burning than Win748. I've found Win760 plenty accurate though and it's easy for me to throw consistent charges with my powder measure when using it.:)

I used AA2520 for some accurate loads with 150 and 165 grain bullets in 308. You might look at the load tables for that powder also.

I haven't tried a lot of powders in 308, but I kind of liked IMR4064. Shooting about 3/8" for 10 shots at 100 yards with Sierra 168s, and had a nice 1-1/2" (two shots touching) 3-shot group at 300 yards with Nosler 165 BTs. I'm not a bad shot, not a great shot, and this is out of a stock Rem 700. I had heard that Varget was less temperature-sensitive than many powders. Also like the Vihtavuori products, but haven't used any in a 308 load.

+1 for AA2520. I can get very nice groups out of a good dose of 2520 and 147 to 165gr bullets out of my 308 mauser.

Also have good luck with Varget, BLC2 and H-335. Others have told me that H-322 is a good powder to use. Stick powders that I use are IMR-4895 and 4198...the 4198 I use for light loads and it works very well for those as well as CB loads.

I use Win LR Mag primers with ball powders, as some reloading manuals suggest...but with stick powders I use a CCI-200 primer.

Hodgdon refered to varget as 4064 short cut in the last issue or so of Handloader magazine.I like them both but varget is so much cleaner.

In .308, I've never felt the need to look further than Varget. I've had great loads with Varget in two different rifles and a both 150 and 125 grain bullet weights.

There are many powders that serve the 308 well, to me Varget works best for me now. I used to eat 8# jugs of IMR 4895 when I shot Highpower!

Have tried Varget, IMR4895 pulldown, Reloader 15, and N550. Really like the IMR4895 pulldown due to the price $10/pound (and it shoots great), and have found Reloader 15 to be a great powder as well.

Powder for .308

IMX, most .308's aren't real fussy as to powder, given one of appropriate burn speed.

Most of my .308Win loading has been with H 380. But you didn't want a Hodgdon powder.

If you want something different, the Nosler Reloading Guide, 5th ed, suggests Viht N 140, as the most accurate powder they tested with their 150 and 155 grain bullets. They got the best results with their starting load of 42.5 grains of N 140, which they clocked at 2645 fps. YMMV of course.

I have only tried H335 and Varget for .308. For my rifle, H335 gave very slightly better groups.

I reload half a dozen rifle calibers, and after trying a lot of powders finally looked at all those small, expensive cans containing similar-looking powder, came to my senses and have standardized on 4895 milsurp for everything from .223 to 8-mm Mauser. Works fine in all, inexpensive bulk purchases, released a lot of storage space, and no more concerns about accidently using or mixing different powders.:p

Have similarly standardized on #231 for everything from 9-mm Mak to .45 Colt.:)

I use H335 for normal loads in 308 and H380 for match loads with Hornady 168 match bullets. Works great in Ruber M77 and my M1A.
