On the up stroke . Mainly so the boolit stays on . I was having
An issue before where if I were to place the boolit on then
Pull down on the handle it would click and the boolit could
Sometimes fall off.

New to the progressive after 25 yrs of single stage. Love the production! I started this week with itty bitty .380 and noticed powder (Unique) jumping out a few grains as the shell plate moved, so I started putting the bollit (100 gr Berry's HBRN) in at stage 3 which worked pretty good.
My 2 cents worth...

That's the way I have always done it. I rest my little finger on the shell plate to dampen it and steady my hand make placement easy.

I put mine on the case on the upstroke as it goes into the seater die in station 4. Mine also seems to shake a few specks of powder out as it indexes.

I do it either way. Sometimes I put a bullet feeding die into station 4 and run it through the ten bullets it holds then feed by hand until I get bored of that and fill it up again. It keeps me on my toes regardless. I need to get some clear piping to hold more bullets, but it doesn't bother me to feed by hand yet.

Anyway, I don't really have a set system. I generally like to hold the bullet on my Hornady die's guide collar until the round gets there and let it ride up and in. If the bullet feeder die automatically dropped the bullet, I slow down my stroke just a bit so the bullet doesn't move. I have had a bullet tip over once (plated bullet, had case marks on the side) and I keep it as a reminder to slow down at this step.

With most calibers, the bullets often gets loose, so I will hold it steady until it is in the die. With rifles, I like to leave station 3 open to I can get a good look in the case to make sure there's powder in there.

That is how I do it.

If you haven't tried one yet get a Hornady seating die, saved me from the pinch more than a few times.

If the bullet is getting loose you're not using the PTX expander or at least not setting it up properly.

I have my powder measure with PTX expander in station #2.
This takes a lot of messing around but it can be done.
I use an RCBS Lockout Die in station#3 and the bullet feeder die in station #4.
The only time I have issues is when using plated bullets which have some inconsistencies. Jacketed bullets work much better.

When I ran an LNL for rifle rounds I had to wait. If I put it into the case before the final 1/2 index the tip of the bullet would hit the bottom of the die and get knocked off.

On the Dillions your fully indexed when you complete the bottom of the rams stroke.
