New to the forums, I've searched and absorbed a lot but I'm looking for some info on 3 models I've narrowed my selection to, all in .223.

I want something that will shoot MOA @ 200 yards with factory ammo (high quality) since I don't reload. I also want something that's looks good and since I'm not hunting shiny is fine. I've got plenty of matte black weapons, I want this on to look and feel more refined than a combat weapon.

Here's what I've found that I like in my price range. I looked at the Remington SPS Varmint and even with the $40 rebate good until the 31st I just can't warm up to them.

Weatherby Vanguard S2 Varmint (guaranteed SUB MOA)
Savage 12 FCV (Accustock)
Savage 25 LVT (bedded and floated)

Or, because I'm a sucker for laminated stocks and fluted barrels, if I bump my budget up $200 I can get into one of these.

Savage 12 BTCSS
Savage 12 VLP DBM
Savage 12 BVSS

First question, Weatherby or Savage? I like the quality look and feel of the Weatherby and the Howa action has a good reputation but is it a better shooter than the Savages? I do love their new 2 stage trigger! From what I've read there are very few Weatherby owners who don't really like their guns. That's a good sign. On the flip side, based on internet chatter you would think every savage is SUB MOA out of the box with anything you want to throw into it. My bet is, in this price range it's a toss up between the Weatherby and the Savage and the shooter and ammo will make the biggest difference.

Second question, is the Model 25 the bastard child of the Savage line? I mean it really doesn't get a lot of love in the internet and I rarely see them in any local shops and there's hardly any range reports that I can find. Yet it' a very good looking gun, it fits well and points great with the thumb hole and Monte Carlo style stock (I've handled one in the 17 Hornet). They use a modified version of the threaded barrel attachment method to set a tight headspace and are bedded and free floated. It seems like a lot of gun for a $635 street price, what am I missing or are the Model 12's with the wood stocks really $300 better?

Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas.

Mark

Yes, I have seen the MVP but not in person. It looks like a good package, I may give it a second look if I can find one to hold. Thanks.

I'm still thinking the guns I listed are inherently more accurate but that may just be me based on marketing and Internet opinions.

I have a cz 527 american .223, it is a nail driver. It is one of the nicest looking rifles i own. I got mine on a raffle and would not have thought about cz otherwise, but as far as that rifle goes, they know what they are doing. I see on their website the new 527's are $711 msrp. The gun also has a double set target trigger which i really like but i think they might have gotten rid of that in the new rifles.

I don't have a Weatherby but my Savage 12 BVSS wii shoot the groups you desire. I paid about $600 for it a few years ago (unscoped) and have a Nikon Monarch 6-24x44 scope on it. Last time I shot it at 200 yards, I had a 4-shot group of .5". That was a hand load with a 40 grain Hornady V-Max but the Savage can shoot similar groups with good factory ammo. The AccuTrigger is amazing.

Savage 25 .223

I have a 25 in .223 but it is the Classic Sporter model, will attach a pic. With 69 gr PRVI partizan it does under 1" groups. With typical 55gr stuff, nothing expensive, 1.5" groups are more the norm. I have not tried any really good target ammo. The PRVI is about $10 a box and it is accurate so that is as far as I go. The gun is a beauty, great wood, really nice bluing. I am not in love with the feel of the bolt, very clunky and kind of loud, but the gun shoots well and was not expensive. If I see a decent price I would probably go for a CZ American 223 next time.

The Savage 12 (in any model) would be my choice. Mine started out as a plain jane 12FV, but eventually morphed into this.

Now it has a SSS LVT stock and a Lothar Walther barrel, stayed with the standard Accutrigger.

Remington Model 700 VTR

My Dad bought one of these on a whim because it was affordable. He told me about it, and I didn't put much weight into what he was raving about it until I shot it myself. This thing is bad ass! Very accurate right out of the box, muzzle break, and it's super easy to swing. I'm looking for the same, but in a 22-250. It's so easy to shoot this gun off-hand! Follow-up shots are real easy, and the kick (even for a .223) is way easy. Give it a try, I think you'll like it!

Well, I ended up ordering one of the last 2 Savage 12 BTCSS's in the country in .223. It should be here in a week or so. I also found a smokin' deal on a Nikon Monarch 5-20x44mm scope through another thread here for $365 so all that's left is to find some mounts and I'm all set. I can't wait to get this package to the range.

BTW, I did blow my budget. I wanted to keep everything under $1000....... $965 (gun) + $365 (scope) + $50 (mounts) + tax is a bit over $1000 ;)

I have gradually "converted" all my centerfire bolt guns to Savage. Even the Remington 700 VLS got sold to buy a Savage in the same caliber (.223). I just can't beat the accuracy. Factory ammo shoots well, handloading puts these way out in front of the pack. Savage isn't noted for pretty rifles, but I've never killed anything by making it admire my rifle. I've got an older model 10, way before the accutrigger, that will put a box of handloads (Varget and a Hornady 150gr bullet) into a nickel at 100 yards. The .223 I use for 'yotes and woodchucks is insane with a 60gr V-Max over Varget. And it's a cheap Stevens (Savage without the new accutrigger).

Since I started shooting ARs, I've lost interest in my bolt rifles. I have a nice Remmy 700 VLS with Timney trigger that I'd sell for $650. ;)

I have a Weatherby VS in 223 and highly recommend it. I have shot Savage they are good too but like Vangard better.

It was between the Savage and the Weatherby and I went with the Savage for looks, fit and accuracy (debatable as the Weatherby is also very accurate). The Savage was just more of what I was looking for but if I hadn't been able to find the BTCSS I would have purchased the Weatherby.

Then again, I was at a store yesterday that had a CZ527 Varmint in .223 and it was a beautiful gun. Too many guns, not enough money ;)

Savage makes good guns, but so do all of the manufacures today, with the exception being the remington 770 line, and some of them shoot well. I sold a model 70 in 223 because my savage axis in 223 outshot it and has a decent trigger.
that said, my most acurate 223 is an olmpic arms ultra match, 20" stainless barrel on a gator lower, 1/2" groups are the norm.
