Motion Detector For Gun Safe?

How do I set up a motion detector which will trigger an alarm and call my telephone if someone tried to break into or steel my safe?

My thought is that it would be attached to the safe and in radio communication with a unit in another part of the house. If the unit on the safe was moved or destroyed, the other unit would sound an alarm and call my cell phone.
 
Is this something you are trying to do yourself?
Any reputable security company can set up a motion sensor to the alarm panel to call your cell in the event of an alarm event trigger. You can even have it take video and send a snapshot to your phone.
If its something you want to do yourself and without a yearly contract you can look at some of the alarms at homesecuritysuperstore.com and have alarm.com do the central station.
 
There are numerous ways to do this, depending upon your specifics.

It sounds to me like you don't want a UL listed monitoring station, just an auto-dialer. Given that monthly monitoring can cost less than $10 or so a month, I strongly suggest the monitored route. Plus, you can add fire and CO protection for little more than the cost of the sensors. You definitely don't need to pay one of the big advertised companies $40 a month.

You could look into Z Wave products. They have a ton of things for your home that can be controled from your smart phone. You could have a sensor that alerts your phone, you could even have a camera setup to activate when the sensor trips and you could watch/record the video on your phone wherever you are. Cool stuff!
 
Alarm co did it

I have my alarm Co put a motion detector facing my safe AND then I put cameras on it too.

I can access the cameras [ cell phone ] as well as a call from my Alarm co will do the alerts just fine.
 
At my dads we bought two extra window door alarms. The ones that go off when signal is broke. Installed one inside the safe doormen and one behind safe on floor. One behind safe will go off when safe is moved and one inside safe will broadcast signal when door is opened. This is attached to his a.c.t. alarm. I don't have whole house security so I bought a stand alone system that calls my phone.
 
While there are several ways to go about what you want to do but as everyone mentioned the simple efficient way is if you already have a home monitored security system. Adding a sensor or sensors is simple and they can send you a text or email to your smart cell phone alerting you to whatever you want to be alerted about. Unless you have a home PC that runs 24/7 the easiest way is to go through a home security system.

x10.com has some low dollar setups that call the phone numbers you input. They DON'T require a monitor fee. Simply set them up, program them, and they call you or whoever when triggered. I use this at my business plus a video monitoring system I can watch from my phone as well. Sometimes I get false signals from birds and such and being able to see things prevents me calling the cops for nothing.
 
I will ad this: Most of the setups focus on door sensors - move a magnet attached to the door to trigger a sensor on the doorframe. This allows arming while at home so if someone opens a door or window, it sounds off. I personally don't like these sensors as well as the motion sensors. They trigger of of PIR (passive infra red). You can't arm it when you're home the same as with door/window triggers, but they're simpler to setup and more reliable. Anyone interested, if you dig DEEP around the website, you can find some packages heavy on motion sensors rather than the common door/window pars. Again, that's MY preference after using these since around 2005 when Radio Shack sold them. They aren't foolproof, but they do work as expected. I do get an occasional false trigger from animals (it's a car repairs shop) and poor aiming with sunlight coming through the windows affecting the sensors, but have NEVER been able to NOT arm it trying to sneak around. You decide if that fits your needs. Pay once, hook it up, done. Replace batteries every year or so.

I'm not sure what you are saying here but both P.I.R. motion detectors and magnetic door/window switches can be bypassed on an alarm system if needed. This of course allows you to move around in the house and not trigger an alarm from a motion detector when the system is armed.

As to the OP, you have got some good suggestions above. If you have an alarm system it would be easy to hardwire or go wireless with sensors and/or motion detectors on your safe. Alarm system monitoring of course would provide direct contact to you. Monitoring can also be configured to dial out on a cell phone instead of landline in case someone cuts the incoming phone line.

As suggested there are cheaper routes.
 
We were given an extra door sensor with our system. The dude suggested how and where we could install it.

I imagine behind the closet door which houses the safe, or actually on the safe would work. Sounds like a good idea.
 
I put a very cheap GE stand-alone electronic window alarm in an out-of-sight location on the door of my safe. When I set it to "alarm," it screams bloody murder any time the door is opened and continues doing that until it's deactivated. It's loud enough to be heard by my immediate neighbors. Set to "chime," it merely emits a little doorbell sound and is done until the next time.

The thing doesn't send an alert anywhere, but a snatch and grab thief would not know that. When it alarms unexpectedly it's very disconcerting and quite disorienting. It's no use against a determined pro, but it serves as another layer of deterrence against the run-of-the-mill burglar.

Without investigating the common thief doesn't know it isn't sending anything anywhere. :)

If you have a monitored alarm you just add the sensor to its proprietary zone and when it trips, alarm co will know its the safe. If no alarm, go tm radio shack, buy a Swann security camera with motion sensor and live monitoring via internet. You can view it anytime you want from your smart phone and it will send you an email or text everytime it senses motion. Costs 149.99 to do this and must have internet at house.
 
My gun safe is in the garage covered with the card board box it came in so it doesn't look so obvious but I think I am fortunate not to have to "worry" about a motion sensor or alarm to protect the safe against intrusion.....:uhoh:
